Deland McCullough Sets Bold Standards as Oklahoma's New RB Coach

Oklahoma's new running back coach Deland McCullough sets a high bar with a winning legacy, aiming to transform the Sooners' rushing game and meet championship expectations.

In his debut as Oklahoma's new running backs coach, Deland McCullough wasted no time setting the bar high for his squad. The Sooners officially welcomed McCullough and cornerbacks coach LaMar Morgan, rounding out Brent Venables' staff for the 2026 season. McCullough's message to fans was clear: expect a disciplined and productive running back unit.

With a robust 15-year track record spanning college football and the NFL, McCullough brings a wealth of experience. His journey began when Kevin Wilson, now OU’s assistant head coach for offense, gave him his first full-time coaching role at Indiana in 2011. McCullough was no stranger to Wilson, having played under him at Miami (OH).

During his six years at Indiana, McCullough's running backs shattered 19 school rushing records and sent two players to the NFL Draft. His career then took him to USC and later to the NFL with the Kansas City Chiefs, where he reached back-to-back Super Bowls, winning a championship in 2020.

After a brief return to Indiana in 2021, McCullough spent three seasons at Notre Dame, helping the Fighting Irish reach the College Football Playoff National Championship Game in 2024. A stint with the Las Vegas Raiders followed before his current position at Oklahoma.

Throughout his career, McCullough has developed 17 running backs who achieved over 1,000 scrimmage yards in a season, including Raiders standout Ashton Jeanty with 1,321 yards last year.

The Sooners have been in a drought, lacking a 1,000-yard rusher since Eric Gray in 2022. But with McCullough at the helm and a potent duo in Xavier Robinson and Tory Blaylock, that could change in 2026.

"Oklahoma stands for grit, tradition, and championship aspirations," McCullough stated. "I've built strong relationships with many of the backs here.

Now, it's about elevating our game and competing fiercely in the SEC. I've learned from great coaches to master your craft, and that's what I bring to the table.

Our players will be prepared, confident, and ready to shine."
