David Stones NFL Buzz Leaves One Big Question For Oklahoma Fans

Can Oklahoma's David Stone cement his spot in the top NFL picks as he eyes a potential future with the New York Giants?

David Stone’s name is showing up in first-round territory in the latest USA TODAY Sports 2027 NFL Mock Draft, and the Oklahoma defensive tackle landed in a familiar kind of spotlight: big tools, big upside, and a little more room to prove it.

USA TODAY Sports projects Stone to the New York Giants with the 17th pick. The mock draft, which updates first-round projections using ESPN’s current average draft position for each team, takes a close look at prospects across the country and sees Stone as a fit for a team searching for a disruptive presence up front.

Their explanation leans into the same theme that has followed Stone since he arrived as a five-star recruit in 2024. At 6-3, 312 pounds, the production has not yet fully caught up to the talent, but the ceiling is obvious enough that teams are expected to keep coming back to him. USA TODAY Sports wrote:

John Harbaugh casting a net for Jeffery Simmons shows just how interested the Giants are in recapturing a highly disruptive defensive lineman. That effort in the draft could continue with Stone.

Production still lags well behind potential when assessing the 6-3, 312-pounder, whose stock could slide if he doesn't display more consistency down the stretch. Nevertheless, there likely will be no shortage of coaching staffs eager to coax out the best of him.

Stone’s strongest work since committing has come this season, and his two best games both arrived in 2027. Against New Mexico, he put together a career night with eight tackles and two tackles for loss in Oklahoma’s 14-6 win. Two weeks ago against Mississippi State, he followed that up with seven tackles and 1.5 sacks.

Through eight games this season, Stone has 33 tackles, including 14 solo stops, along with 3.5 tackles for loss and two sacks.

Oklahoma, meanwhile, sits at 4-4 and is trying to recover from last week’s loss to South Carolina. The Sooners now turn their attention to their first game at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium, where they’ll face the No. 24 Florida Gators.

Big 12 Shakeup Could Change What Oklahoma Is Up Against

The Big 12 is heading into a leadership transition at a moment when the leagues direction matters plenty to Oklahoma. Commissioner Brett Yormark said he will step down on Jan. 31, ending a run that helped shape the conference through a stretch of real change and uncertainty. For the Sooners, who have long had to track every shift in the Big 12 landscape, the timing adds another layer of intrigue to a league already in motion.

Yormark said he plans to take a new role outside of college athletics, leaving the conference to sort out its next chapter without one of its most visible voices. For Oklahoma, the bigger question is what kind of Big 12 emerges from here and how that affects the competitive terrain around it. A change at the top does not alter the Sooners immediate business, but it does matter for the long view, especially in a conference where leadership decisions can ripple quickly. [Read more 🡒]

Oklahoma Gets An Early Chance To Calm Growing Concern Around Porter Moser

Porter Moser is already feeling the heat in Norman after Oklahoma opened the season with a loss to East Texas A&M, a stumble that only sharpened the questions around a program trying to find its footing. The Sooners do not have much time to let that linger, with Mississippi Valley State up next and a chance to steady things before the early-season noise gets any louder.

Oklahoma is also hoping for help on the injury front, with Xzayvier Brown a possible return that would give the rotation a needed lift. Mississippi Valley State arrives in Mike Daviss first season at the helm and has a difficult schedule in front of it, but the Delta Devils are also trying to build something after several rough years, which makes this one more than just a tune-up for the Sooners. Florida Faces A Tough Home Test With Little Margin For Error

Florida heads into its Week 10 matchup with Oklahoma at 5-3, but the recent slide has left little room for comfort. After losing three of its last four, the Gators are leaning heavily on running back Jadan Baugh to steady an offense that needs something dependable against a Sooners team that has had its own issues moving the ball efficiently on the ground and through the air.

The setting makes for a tricky home test, especially with betting markets treating this as a game where every possession matters. Oklahoma has not been clean enough offensively to inspire much confidence, but Floridas margin for error is just as thin, which is why this one feels like a crossroads game for both teams even before kickoff.
