NORMAN - Danny Saili didn’t need long to make an impression at Oklahoma.
In the Sooners’ 51-0 win over UTEP, the former Arkansas defensive lineman logged seven snaps, a small number that still carried real weight considering how recently he arrived in Norman. Brent Venables’ defense has a reputation for being tough to learn, especially for newcomers, but Saili found his footing quickly enough to draw praise from the head coach and his new teammates.
“He’s remarkably picked up things really fast, but his experience really showed,” Venables said. “He was great.”
Saili’s background explains part of the fast start. He spent two seasons at Arkansas, appearing in 18 games, and had once been the “big man on campus” in Fayetteville, according to Isaiah Sategna, who shared a locker room with him there before the two crossed paths again at Oklahoma.
“He was about 390 back then,” Sategna said with a chuckle after Oklahoma's 51-0 win over UTEP. “Him and (E’Marion Harris) are my guys.

That familiarity helped, but it wasn’t the only reason Saili settled in so smoothly. Oklahoma also had to make sure everything lined up before he ever took the field.
After the 2025 season ended, Saili entered the transfer portal and didn’t get drafted or land a roster spot. Once the five-for-five rule was implemented, he was able to move to Oklahoma, and he received a TRO for NCAA eligibility on Thursday, clearing him to play on Friday night.
Venables said the program did its homework before adding him.
From the outside, Saili’s arrival might have looked like a late roster patch. Inside the building, though, the Sooners saw a player who could help right away, especially in a spot where depth mattered.
“That’s one of the positions that we have really been concerned with just the overall depth. So, he’s going to go and help us,” Venables said.
His teammates noticed the same thing almost immediately. Sategna said Saili’s quick grasp of the defense says plenty about the work he has already put in.
“I know BV’s defense is really complicated. For him to pick up pretty quickly, that’s kudos to him,” Sategna said. “That shows all the work he has been putting in behind closed doors.”
Owen Heinecke offered a similar read, saying Saili blended in without much friction and brought something the Sooners want more of.
“It’s not easy to pick up a Venables defense but he comes in and he’s a natural,” Heinecke said. “He brings a lot of competitive depth and that’s what gets you through a long, grueling SEC season.” “
For Saili, the journey has been a winding one, but the opening chapter at Oklahoma came with a familiar cast and a quick adjustment. Even so, Sategna pointed out that the transition from Arkansas to Norman comes with its own clear differences.
“We know the similarities, we know that there's a lot of differences (between OU and Arkansas),” Sategna said. “It's pretty obvious.”

UTEPs season opener in Norman turned into a long afternoon almost immediately, with the Miners falling behind early and never finding a way to make Oklahoma uncomfortable in a 51-0 loss to the No. 10 Sooners. Scotty Walden spent his postgame remarks sorting through the obvious setbacks, with special teams standing out as a particular problem, even as he tried to keep the bigger picture in view for a roster still trying to take shape.
There was at least some encouragement for UTEP on the offensive side, and Walden said he sees room for the group to keep developing after a game like this.
