Colin Simmons Stuns Texas Fans with Heartfelt Family Dedication

Texas defensive end Colin Simmons leverages football success to transform his brother's autism care and inspire a nonprofit mission.

Colin Simmons has always had a clear purpose every time he dug in on a crucial third down, hit the film room, or pushed himself for that extra rep. It was all about family. Specifically, it was about creating a better life for his mom, Monica McCarley, and his younger brother, Clayton.

Clayton, who has autism, required specialized treatment that often meant long drives from their home in Dallas. Recognizing the need for better resources, Simmons moved his family to the Austin area last year, drastically reducing those lengthy commutes.

“The programs here are just better,” Simmons shared. “My mom used to drive up to 90 minutes just to get Clayton the help he needed. Now, he’s at a school that’s right for him, where he’s getting the right attention and treatment.”

The shift in NCAA rules in 2021, allowing college athletes to earn from their names, images, and likenesses, has been a game-changer for athletes like Simmons. He’s not only supporting his family but also giving back through a nonprofit he founded with his mom. Clay’s Color Crew, inspired by Clayton’s love for colors, aims to bring autism resources to underserved areas in South Dallas and beyond.

Last summer, Simmons hosted the first annual football camp for children with special needs at Duncanville High School, a testament to his commitment to making a difference.

As he enters his junior season with the Texas Longhorns, Simmons is driven by the desire to continue making his family proud. “My mom tells me she’s proud every day, but I feel like there’s more to do,” he said. “I’m not done yet.”

On the field, Simmons is a force to be reckoned with. After a slow start last season, he exploded with 12 sacks to lead the SEC, finishing with a remarkable 21 sacks over two years. Now, with a new defensive coordinator, Will Muschamp, known for crafting elite pass rushes, Simmons is set to take on a fresh role.

“When you turn on the tape, you’ll see,” Simmons hinted, eager to showcase what’s next under Muschamp’s guidance.

But with his initial goals achieved, Simmons finds himself contemplating his next motivation. The family has what they need, and now he’s searching for the next chapter in his journey.
