Ben Arbuckle doesn’t have to guess how Oklahoma fans feel. The Sooners’ 31-year-old offensive coordinator knows the noise is out there, and after a three-game stretch that produced just 37 points and a 1-2 record, the frustration around him has turned loud.
That backdrop makes Saturday’s game in Dallas against the Associated Press’ No. 1 team feel like more than just another Red River matchup for Oklahoma. For Arbuckle, it’s a chance to answer the criticism the only way that really matters.
“You don’t like what people are saying, do something about it, right?" Arbuckle said.
"And ultimately, we get to go do that between the lines. Tough teams win.
Tough players win. And that’s been our message throughout the entire building is just, toughness wins."
This is a different kind of test for Arbuckle. He arrived at Oklahoma with a reputation built on his success in his 20s as an offensive coordinator at Washington State.
Last season’s offense had its rough patches too, but the Sooners’ trip to the College Football Playoff helped soften the edges. Now the problems are harder to ignore: the production has dipped, the losses have piled up, and the fan base is letting him hear it.
Oklahoma coach Brent Venables said Arbuckle is built to handle it.
"It becomes a story when you make it a story," he said. "He’s not naive.
He’s a young guy from an age standpoint, but a guy that -- he’s a tough guy. He’s got great awareness, incredibly bright, and takes great pride.
And he knows when maybe his unit’s not meeting the expectations and standards, and so he gets knee-deep in all the work and the things that it takes to improve and get better and figure out where we fall short, what we need to do, what the remedies are, and things of that nature."
The level of irritation surrounding Arbuckle has been hard to miss. In two unscientific polls on X over the last two weeks, a simple question about whether former Oklahoma coach Lincoln Riley should somehow be brought back to run the offense drew surprising support.
In the first poll, 53% of 204 respondents said yes. In the second, about a week later, 41% of 152 respondents were still in favor.
That’s a striking number when you consider what Riley once meant in Norman. He led Oklahoma to the College Football Playoff three times in five years and coached Heisman winners Baker Mayfield and Kyler Murray. He was embraced as Bob Stoops’ successor.
Then came the stunning turn in 2021. After a crushing loss at Oklahoma State, Riley left for USC and eventually took quarterback Caleb Williams with him, leaving Oklahoma in disarray and Riley with the kind of baggage that still lingers with the fan base.
Arbuckle, for his part, keeps pointing back to the work in front of him.
"We’re talking about doing the hard things better," he said. "Doing the little things better.
That’s toughness to me. And ultimately, the players said it, coach Venables said it -- you don’t like what people are saying, then do something about it.
Change it. There’s no point in wallowing in anything.
And all you can do is get back to work, be better, be better at the basics and go execute at a high level."
Venables also made clear that the offensive issues don’t stop with his coordinator. On Tuesday, he spent much of his time addressing the offensive line’s struggles and said the response has to be collective.
"We all work together," Venables said. "It’s not just him, it’s all of us together trying to figure that out. But I think that as much as anything, it's just getting busy with the doing, the work, putting the pieces of the puzzle together."

Sooners Fans Need To Know This Before Red River Weekend
The annual Red River showdown returns Oct. 10 at Cotton Bowl Stadium during the State Fair of Texas, and for Sooners fans heading to Dallas, the game-day experience will start well before kickoff. With the fair grounds packed and the rivalry atmosphere in full force, Oklahoma supporters are being urged to arrive early and plan ahead, especially with parking and transportation expected to be part of the pregame challenge.
Safety and security will also be front and center, with a clear bag policy in effect and screening at entry points for everyone coming through. Red River Shootout Could Expose Whether Texas Is Really No. 1
The Red River Shootout arrives with Texas carrying the look of a heavyweight, at least on paper, and the SP+ model leans that way too. It projects the Longhorns to win 27-17 and gives them a 73 percent chance of leaving Dallas with another statement victory, which sets up a useful measuring stick for a Texas team trying to justify its top billing.
For Oklahoma, the game offers more than rivalry bragging rights. The Sooners have built their case around a defense that has quietly ranked among the nations best, and this matchup will tell a lot about how well that unit holds up against Arch Manning and a Texas offense still trying to prove it can consistently match elite expectations. If the Longhorns look the part again, the rest of the sport may have to keep treating them like the real No. 1. [Read more 🡒]
Oklahoma's Defense Could Put Texas In Serious Trouble Saturday
Oklahoma has spent the first month of the season looking like a defense built to make life miserable on Saturdays, and that is what makes this Red River matchup so intriguing for Sooners fans. In a week where the college football conversation is filled with upset possibilities, Oklahomas defense stands out as one of the clearest reasons an underdog can flip the script, especially with Texas bringing a young quarterback situation into one of the sports most unforgiving settings.
The matchup matters because the Sooners do not need fireworks to stay in it if their defense keeps forcing Texas into uncomfortable spots. With Arch Manning still searching for rhythm, Oklahoma has a path to muddy the game and turn every possession into a stress test, which is exactly the kind of formula that can turn a rivalry weekend into a problem for the favorite.
