Baker Mayfield is getting paid like one of the NFL’s top quarterbacks, and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are making it official.
After a lengthy stretch of negotiations that dragged through the summer, the former OU Heisman winner agreed to a three-year, $165 million extension with Tampa Bay, according to NFL insider Adam Schefter. The deal was reported Tuesday afternoon, just five days before the Buccaneers are set to open the season against Cincinnati.
The numbers had been moving in the wrong direction for a while before the breakthrough. By the end of July, Tampa Bay had put multiple offers on the table in the $40 million range, but Mayfield passed, holding firm to the belief that his value was north of $50 million a year.
That stance now has a clear payoff. Mayfield’s resurgence in Tampa Bay has turned him into one of the league’s premium quarterbacks, and the new extension puts him tied for the third highest-paid player at his position at an average of $55 million per year.
His production has backed up the ask. Mayfield put together a career revival with the Buccaneers, throwing for 4,500 yards and 41 touchdowns in 2024. He kept rolling into 2025 with a strong start, piling up 1,539 passing yards in Tampa Bay’s first six games.
Even with that level of play, the 2026 season ended without a playoff berth, a result tied to a wave of offensive injuries. But Mayfield’s performance was still strong enough to land him this kind of contract, and now the Buccaneers have locked him in at the top end of the market.
