Oklahoma will have B.J. Edwards available when the Sooners open the season Monday night.
The OU guard was granted a temporary restraining order Friday by Cleveland County District Judge Michael Tupper, which temporarily clears him for a fifth season. That means Edwards, who has been working out with the team every day, is eligible to play against East Texas A&M at 7 p.m. Monday at Lloyd Noble Center.
Edwards was among several athletes added Friday as new plaintiffs to an existing TRO. That earlier order, issued Sept. 3, had already given Sooners defensive tackle Danny Saili and first baseman Dayton Tockey temporary eligibility.
The legal fight centers on the NCAA’s new “Five-for-Five Rule,” which the organization’s governance structure approved this summer. The rule allows current Division I athletes five years to compete in NCAA sports after graduating high school. The plaintiffs say the NCAA has left out athletes from the high school graduating class of 2022.
Edwards had been ruled ineligible for the last two months after the Tennessee Court of Appeals on Aug. 26 stayed the injunction he had previously received along with other plaintiff athletes.
For Porter Moser, the on-court piece is what matters now. The OU coach has seen enough of Edwards to know what he brings.
“I see a physical guard,” OU coach Porter Moser said this week. “He can put your chest on somebody and really level somebody off.
An SEC athlete. Talking to many ACC coaches that coached against them, they said we 100% talked about BJ Edwards' defensive presence in our scouting meetings.
“He has a presence defensively. He does a little bit of everything.”
Edwards transferred from SMU after starting the Mustangs' first 28 games last season, before an injury ended his year. He averaged 12.7 points, 5.9 rebounds and 4.9 assists, and he was the only player nationally with three games of 20 points, five rebounds, five assists and five steals.
His college résumé is already extensive. Edwards has played in 110 games and made 93 starts while piling up 841 points, 440 rebounds, 370 assists and 181 steals across his time at Tennessee and SMU.
He also earned two selections to the ACC All-Defensive Team with the Mustangs.

Two Former Sooners Are Already Turning Heads In The NFL
Two former Sooners are already making an early impression in the NFL, and both have landed on a list that tends to get attention around the league. Through the first seven weeks of the 2026 season, Pro Football Focus ranked Atlanta Falcons linebacker Kendal Daniels fifth among the top 15 highest-graded rookies, while Pittsburgh Steelers defensive back Robert Spears-Jennings checked in seventh.
Daniels has climbed back into the mix after returning from injury, and his 77.7 overall grade shows how quickly he has settled in once healthy. Spears-Jennings has been steady enough to stay in that conversation as well, with his grades in each game consistently landing above 60.0, a sign that both rookies are already giving their new teams something to build on. Oklahoma Faces New Week 9 Concern South Carolina Can Exploit
Oklahoma heads into Week 9 with its injury report carrying real weight, especially up front. The Sooners are already down offensive linemen Eddy Pierre-Louis and Ryan Fodje, while center Jake Maikkula is listed as questionable, leaving the staff to sort through replacement options before facing South Carolina.
The concern does not stop there. Defensive back Eli Bowen is doubtful, and Peyton Bowen is probable to suit up, but the bigger issue is how the offensive line situation could affect Oklahomas ability to handle pressure and stay on schedule. Against a South Carolina defense looking for any opening, that uncertainty is the kind of development the Sooners would rather not be managing this late in the week. [Read more 🡒]
Oklahoma Gets One Big Defensive Boost As Line Questions Linger
The latest SEC availability report brought a little relief for Oklahoma on the defensive side, with safety Peyton Bowen listed as probable for the upcoming game against South Carolina. That matters for a unit trying to stay steady as the Sooners continue sorting through a few injury questions elsewhere, including the status of his brother Eli Bowen and center Jake Maikkula.
Up front, the picture is less settled. Left tackle Fred Hinton has been ruled out, while running back Xavier Robinson is back on the available list after being removed from the report, giving Oklahoma at least one piece of good news on offense. The full report still leaves several moving parts to monitor, and the line remains the spot where the Sooners are waiting for clearer answers. [Read more 🡒]
