Thunder Take Low-Risk Swing On A Needed Wing Defender

The Oklahoma City Thunder's latest acquisition of Ochai Agbaji represents a calculated gamble on his untapped potential, aiming to bolster their roster without breaking the bank.

The Thunder are taking a calculated swing on Ochai Agbaji, and it comes at a time when Oklahoma City’s roster has been getting thinned out fast. On Friday, Michael Scotto of HoopsHype reported that the team plans to sign Agbaji to occupy its 15th and final roster spot.

For a front office that has long valued size, mobility and defensive versatility on the wing, Agbaji fits the mold. He stands 6-foot-5 with a near 7-foot wingspan, bringing the kind of length and athleticism that lets him defend multiple spots and fly up and down the floor.

That profile is part of why this feels like a low-risk bet with real upside attached. Agbaji was a 2022 lottery pick, and even though he has not carved out the level of consistency teams expect from a top-14 selection, he has shown enough flashes to keep teams interested.

His path through the league has been a winding one. He opened with the Utah Jazz and put together a respectable rookie season, averaging 7.9 points and 2.1 boards while shooting 35.5 percent from deep. Midway through his second year, he was moved to the Raptors.

In Toronto, he took another step. During his first full season there, Agbaji averaged 10.4 points and 3.8 rebounds while shooting 49.8 percent from the field and 39.9 percent from three. He also ranked in the 94 percentile in perimeter isolation defense and the 74 percentile in rim deterrence.

Then came another shift. After the 2024-25 season, Toronto moved him on as it leaned more toward a win-now direction, sending him to the Nets.

Even with the change of scenery, Agbaji continued to produce. In 20 games with Brooklyn, he averaged 6.7 points and 2.3 rebounds per game while shooting .455/ .349/ .786. But the Nets declined his $8.8 million qualifying offer, sending him into unrestricted free agency.

That led to a camp invite from the Knicks, though New York ultimately used its open roster spot on James Wiseman and waived Agbaji.

Now he lands with a Thunder team that has a clear need on the wing after the recent injuries to Jalen Williams and Cason Wallace. With Oklahoma City’s defensive approach and its need for another body on the perimeter, this may be the best fit Agbaji has had yet.

He is only 26, which leaves plenty of runway for him to settle in and become a reliable rotation piece. The Thunder are betting he can do exactly that.

Thunder Just Addressed A Growing Problem On The Wing

With injuries piling up on the wing and around the rest of the roster, the Thunder are moving to add some needed depth. Oklahoma City is expected to bring in free agent swingman Ochai Agbaji, a 2022 first-round draft pick who was recently waived by the Knicks, giving the team another body at a position where availability has become a real concern.

Agbaji is set to arrive on a non-guaranteed, minimum-salary deal, which gives the Thunder some flexibility as they try to navigate the short-term stretch ahead. The move also keeps Oklahoma Citys roster options open as it looks for ways to patch the gaps without sacrificing long-term flexibility. [Read more 🡒]

Thunder Just Took A Flier On A Familiar Wing For A Reason

The Thunder have taken a low-risk swing on the wing by adding a familiar NBA body to the mix as they look to shore up depth for the stretch ahead. The move gives Oklahoma City another 6-foot-5 option after injuries have left the rotation thinner than usual on the perimeter, a spot the team has had to monitor closely.

Ochai Agbaji arrives with four NBA seasons behind him and a rsum that already includes stops with the Raptors, Jazz and Nets, plus the pedigree of being the No. 14 pick in the 2022 NBA Draft. For a team trying to stay flexible while dealing with some short-term uncertainty, the signing fits the profile of a practical depth play, even if the long-term role is still to be determined. Thunder Injuries Could Push OKC Toward A Familiar Trade Target

The Thunders injury situation has turned into a roster problem almost as quickly as it became a medical one, with Jalen Williams and Cason Wallace both undergoing surgery and facing an indefinite absence. With two rotation pieces suddenly unavailable, Oklahoma City is looking at ways to keep its depth intact and avoid asking too much of the rest of the bench during a stretch that could reshape the early part of the season.

One name that has surfaced is a familiar one for the front office, a young wing whose path has already intersected with the Thunder before. He is in the second year of his rookie deal and, with a role that has become less secure elsewhere, he could fit the kind of depth Oklahoma City needs if it decides to add another perimeter option rather than simply ride out the injuries.
