Thunder Suddenly Face A Tough New Test After Jalen Williams Injury

Deck: As the Oklahoma City Thunder navigate a slew of injuries, their resilience and adaptability will be put to the test against the Phoenix Suns tonight.

The Thunder walk into their second game of the season already carrying a heavy load. Less than 24 hours after Jalen Williams suffered a gruesome leg injury in Oklahoma City’s 108-101 win over the L.A. Clippers, the 3-0 team is right back on the floor for a back-to-back against the Phoenix Suns.

And the availability picture is far from settled. The first back-to-back of the season comes with real uncertainty around who will be available, with the Thunder already down Williams, rookie Thomas Sorber and second-year guard Nikola Topic because of injuries.

The team has not said how it plans to handle other regulars such as Alex Caruso and Isaiah Hartenstein, though an injury report is expected around noon. It’s already clear Oklahoma City will be shorthanded for this rematch of last year’s first-round Western Conference playoff series.

Phoenix has its own absences to manage. The Suns are without Drew Timme and Mark Williams, while Oso Ighodaro is listed as questionable.

The biggest question inside Paycom Center may not be the lineup card so much as the first few minutes. Does Oklahoma City come out flat after the emotional blow of Williams’ injury?

Or does it channel that moment into a fast, aggressive response? Either result would be understandable.

As Mark Daigneault said after Sunday’s game, the team has to let themselves feel whatever it is they are feeling right now. If the Thunder look heavy-legged or off rhythm, that doesn’t change much about the bigger picture.

If they come out firing and light up the building, that would fit just as easily with this group.

There’s also the basketball-side pressure on the players who may need to create more. It’s unclear whether Shai Gilgeous-Alexander will be available, but the attention on the floor will land on the secondary creators, with Jared McCain, Cason Wallace and Ajay Mitchell all in line for bigger responsibilities. With Williams out, what those players do in expanded roles could end up telling the story of Oklahoma City’s night.

If Chet Holmgren and Isaiah Hartenstein are both in, and Aday Mara is available off the bench, the Thunder should have a real edge on the glass. Phoenix is undersized, and that opens the door for Oklahoma City to win possessions with second-chance points while also finishing defensive stops the way Williams often does so well.

Whether that pushes the Thunder to 4-0 is still to be seen. But this should be an emotional night in the Paycom Center, with a Tuesday off day waiting on the other side and a road trip starting Wednesday in Dallas against the Mavericks.

Thunders Unbeaten Start Suddenly Comes With A Worry Fans Will Feel

Oklahoma Citys unbeaten start came with a reminder that the early-season grind can change quickly, even when the results keep going the right way. Against the Clippers, the Thunder were still in control late in the fourth quarter behind Shai Gilgeous-Alexanders 27 points, but the bigger concern for the moment was what happened in the third quarter when the rotation took a hit.

Jaylin Williams and Cason Wallace both left with injuries in that stretch, and the Thunder had to finish the game without either of them. Williams was dealing with right wrist soreness, while Wallace had left shoulder soreness, leaving Oklahoma City with two more health questions to monitor as it tries to keep this hot start rolling. Thunder Suddenly Have A Huge Jalen Williams Concern

The Thunder had an unnerving moment in the fourth quarter against the Clippers when Jalen Williams went up for a dunk and came down awkwardly on his leg. The play quickly shifted from routine highlight attempt to concern, and Williams was eventually carted off the floor wearing a leg brace after a brief wave of reassurance to the crowd with a thumbs up.

For Oklahoma City, the bigger issue now is the silence that followed. There has been no official update on Williams status, leaving the Thunder to wait and wonder after seeing one of their key players exit with what appeared to be a leg injury. [Read more 🡒]

Thunder Return Home With Clippers Already Facing A Big Problem

The Thunder are back at Paycom Center on Sunday night with a chance to keep building on a 2-0 start, and the Clippers arrive already managing a tricky early-season roster situation. It is a familiar kind of October test for Oklahoma City, with the game set for 6 p.m. CT and available on the usual broadcast channels, but the more immediate storyline is how both sides handle the early injury report before tipoff.

For the Clippers, the absence of Brandon Ingram because of right heel surgery adds another layer to a lineup still trying to settle in at 1-1. Oklahoma City has its own availability issues to monitor as well, with Nikola Topi, Thomas Sorber and Otega Oweh unavailable, so the focus shifts quickly from record-watching to who can actually suit up and give the Thunder another clean home showing.
