Thunder Stuns Fans with Bold Draft Pick Impacting Hartenstein's Future

The OKC Thunder face a pivotal decision on Isaiah Hartenstein's future as a new draft prospect emerges in ESPN's latest mock draft.

Since joining the Oklahoma City Thunder in the summer of 2024, Isaiah Hartenstein has been a revelation at center. His ability to set solid screens, dominate on both ends of the court, and dish out underrated passes has made him a perfect fit for the Thunder.

However, with the team's salary cap situation becoming increasingly tight, there's been a lot of chatter about his $28.5 million option for the 2026-27 season. Many expect it might be declined as a strategic move to help GM Sam Presti and the front office manage the cap better.

While there are whispers of alternative strategies, a recent mock draft suggests that the Thunder might choose to opt out of the third year of Hartenstein's deal.

Thunder eye Washington's Hannes Steinbach in ESPN mock draft

In Jeremy Woo's latest 2026 NBA Mock Draft for ESPN, the Thunder are projected to use the LA Clippers' pick to select Hannes Steinbach at 15th overall.

Steinbach, a freshman standout at Washington, has quickly made a name for himself as a force on the court. Over 28 games, he's averaging 18.6 points and 11.6 rebounds-ranking second nationally-along with 1.1 steals and 1.1 blocks. His shooting stats are impressive too, hitting 58.6 percent from the field and 35.6 percent from three-point range, albeit on a limited number of attempts.

Standing at 6-foot-11, the 19-year-old has the height NBA teams covet in a big man, though his 220-pound frame suggests he could benefit from adding some muscle.

Steinbach is an intriguing prospect, showing potential as a versatile offensive threat, a relentless rebounder, and a reliable defender. For teams looking to strengthen their frontcourt, passing on him in the middle of the first round would be a missed opportunity.

Oklahoma City, in this scenario, is predicted to pick Steinbach, joining a center rotation that includes Jaylin Williams and Thomas Sorber. Williams is quietly positioning himself to step in as the starting center if Hartenstein leaves, while Sorber, last summer's 15th overall pick, is recovering from an ACL injury.

As it stands, there's no definitive word on whether Hartenstein's contract will be opted out of this offseason. Even if it is, the Thunder appear prepared to fill the void.

Nonetheless, Woo suggests that if Steinbach is available when the Thunder are up, they should seriously consider adding him to their roster, potentially paving the way for Hartenstein's departure.
