The Thunder have used their last open roster spot on a wing with NBA miles and a clear lane to contribute. Per ESPN’s Shams Charania, Oklahoma City is signing free agent Ochai Agbaji, adding a 6-foot-5 defender who has bounced around the league but brings a profile that fits what the team needs right now.
The move comes as Oklahoma City is dealing with a pileup of injuries just five games into the season. Jalen Williams and Cason Wallace are both expected to be out for the seasno after respective surgeries, while the recent absences of Chet Holmgren and Alex Caruso have only tightened the squeeze on the rotation. With the roster already thin on wings, the Thunder had a practical need as much as an opportunistic one.
Agbaji enters as a player who has already had several different looks in the NBA. He’s spent time with the Raptors, Jazz and Nets over four seasons, and his best stretch came in Toronto, where he averaged 10.4 points on 50% shooting. He also arrived in the league with real buzz after four strong years at Kansas, then went No. 14 in the 2022 NBA Draft after a title-winning senior season.
There’s a reason Oklahoma City could take a swing here. Agbaji’s calling card has always been his two-way effort. He has the size and edge to fit in defensively, and while he’s not a steals-and-blocks machine, he should be able to handle point-of-attack assignments at a moderate level.
The offense is the swing skill. Agbaji’s shooting has gone up and down since his Toronto peak. He knocked down 40% of his 4.0 three-point attempts per game with the Raptors, then followed that with a 19% mark from deep in the next seasons there before rebounding to 35% from three in Brooklyn.
That backdrop makes Oklahoma City an interesting landing spot. Playing next to Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Ajay Mitchell and a group of big passers that includes Isaiah Hartenstein, Jaylin Williams and rookie Aday Mara could give Agbaji cleaner looks than he has seen in recent stops.
He most recently spent training camp with the New York Knicks, but now lands with a Thunder team that simply needed more healthy bodies and more wing depth. The addition also gives Oklahoma City more flexibility with its two-way group.
The Thunder’s next game is against the undefeated Houston Rockets on Saturday, Oct. 31 at 7:30 p.m.

Thunder Just Addressed A Growing Problem On The Wing
With injuries piling up on the wing and around the rest of the roster, the Thunder are moving to add some needed depth. Oklahoma City is expected to bring in free agent swingman Ochai Agbaji, a 2022 first-round draft pick who was recently waived by the Knicks, giving the team another body at a position where availability has become a real concern.
Agbaji is set to arrive on a non-guaranteed, minimum-salary deal, which gives the Thunder some flexibility as they try to navigate the short-term stretch ahead. The move also keeps Oklahoma Citys roster options open as it looks for ways to patch the gaps without sacrificing long-term flexibility. [Read more 🡒]
Thunder Take Low-Risk Swing On A Needed Wing Defender
The Thunder are lining up a low-risk addition for their final roster spot, with Ochai Agbaji expected to give them some much-needed wing depth. A 2022 lottery pick who has already bounced around multiple NBA teams in five seasons, Agbaji fits the profile of a player Oklahoma City can bring in without disrupting its broader roster plans while still adding athleticism and defensive versatility.
The timing makes sense for a team that has been nudged toward the wing market by recent injuries, and this is the kind of move that can matter more than it looks at first glance. Agbaji does not need to be a savior here, just a useful body who can help absorb minutes and give the Thunder another perimeter option as they manage the roster and try to stay balanced on both ends. Thunder Injuries Could Push OKC Toward A Familiar Trade Target
The Thunders injury situation has turned into a roster problem almost as quickly as it became a medical one, with Jalen Williams and Cason Wallace both undergoing surgery and facing an indefinite absence. With two rotation pieces suddenly unavailable, Oklahoma City is looking at ways to keep its depth intact and avoid asking too much of the rest of the bench during a stretch that could reshape the early part of the season.
One name that has surfaced is a familiar one for the front office, a young wing whose path has already intersected with the Thunder before. He is in the second year of his rookie deal and, with a role that has become less secure elsewhere, he could fit the kind of depth Oklahoma City needs if it decides to add another perimeter option rather than simply ride out the injuries.
