The Oklahoma City Thunder are trying to steady themselves after back-to-back losses by 20 or more points, and the injury list keeps getting in the way.
OKC has spent the past three seasons sitting atop the Western Conference as the No. 1 seed, but this stretch has looked different. The team has been hit hard by injuries to key pieces, including two All-NBA selections and three former All-Defense players, leaving the roster stretched thin as it heads into a matchup with Cleveland.
Even with the absences, the Thunder still have plenty of talent available. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, the two-time MVP, remains the centerpiece, with young guards Ajay Mitchell and Jared McCain and center Isaiah Hartenstein also in the mix. But the group is clearly operating without much margin for error right now.
Oklahoma City’s injury report includes six players, and several of them would normally be part of the rotation if healthy. Jalen Williams and Cason Wallace, both injured against the Clippers games ago, were not ruled out for the entire season. Both had surgery and will be reevaluated before the end of the 2026-27 season.
Chet Holmgren was also hurt in that same LA game and is expected to return in eight to 10 weeks after suffering a partial tear of his patellar tendon. Alex Caruso’s sprained ankle, which came just one game later, added another major setback for Oklahoma City.
Peyton Watson is listed as questionable with right hamstring tightness/soreness.
Cleveland also has three players on its injury report, and Watson is among them after being acquired from the Nuggets in the offseason. He is questionable for the game.
The Thunder and Cavaliers will meet at 6 p.m. CT at Rocket Arena in Cleveland, with the teams also set for a back-to-back in both Cleveland and OKC.

Thunder Contract Call Just Raised Questions About Their Young Core
The Thunders injury crunch has already forced the roster into a difficult stretch, and the latest contract decision only adds another layer to the uncertainty around the young core. Oklahoma City declined the fourth-year option on Nikola Topic, a move that shifts his future into a more uncertain lane while the team continues to juggle absences and search for stability after a loss to the Houston Rockets.
Jared McCain has been one of the more significant contributors this season, while Thomas Sorber has yet to play because of knee injuries, leaving the Thunder with more questions than answers about how their youth will fit together. Topics situation is now part of that broader picture, especially with the team still navigating injuries to key players and trying to sort out its long-term plans without much margin for error. Thunder Just Sent A Clear Signal About Their Center Rotation
The Thunder have already made one quiet but telling move in the middle of their center picture, exercising Thomas Sorbers rookie-scale team option even though he has yet to play a game for the club. It is the kind of decision that says plenty about how Oklahoma City is thinking about its frontcourt depth, especially with Chet Holmgren sidelined by a knee injury but still around the team in a supporting role.
At the same time, the bigger roster question is getting harder to ignore. Isaiah Hartenstein signed a multi-year extension, but the Thunder are also weighing the long-term cap picture and how much room they want to keep tied up in the center spot as younger pieces emerge. Sorbers option pickup fits that larger calculation, and it leaves the next step in Oklahoma Citys rotation planning very much in play. [Read more 🡒]
Cavs Could Face A Lineup Twist Against Short-Handed Thunder
Oklahoma City will be without Alex Caruso again, as the veteran guard has been ruled out for a second straight game after the ankle sprain he suffered against the Suns. For a Thunder team already dealing with a short-handed look, losing Caruso takes away one of the more disruptive defenders in the rotation and leaves another gap to manage on the perimeter.
Cleveland, meanwhile, is monitoring Peyton Watson, who is listed as questionable with right hamstring soreness ahead of the matchup. If Watson cannot go, the Cavaliers may turn to Mario Hezonja in the starting lineup, adding a potential wrinkle to a game that already has a different feel because of the injury report on both sides.
