Thunder Fans Have Seen This Costly Roster Decision Before

Could Lu Dort's defensive prowess be the key to a strategic trade between the Lakers and Thunder this offseason?

If the Oklahoma City Thunder decide Lu Dort is the odd man out this offseason, the Lakers ought to be paying close attention.

Oklahoma City has already shown it’s willing to part with players to stay ahead of cap trouble, even when that means moving on from talent at a bargain price. That history is what makes a possible Dort departure worth watching, especially after one prediction suggested the Thunder could look to use him as the piece they sacrifice.

“While Dort’s rugged point-of-attack defense is a luxury any contender would crave, his highly volatile 38.5% field-goal efficiency makes his current financial slot the most logical luxury to sacrifice. Rather than waiting for the tax bill to limit their flexibility, look for Oklahoma City to aggressively orchestrate a sign-and-trade or decline his team option to package his elite defensive traits for asset consolidation,” Joe Cervenka wrote.

That’s the kind of profile that always creates a split reaction. Dort brings real value on defense, the kind contenders love to have on the floor when the game gets tight. But the offensive side of his game has never matched that impact, and there are plenty of stretches where he can be tough to watch if you’re hoping for more polish with the ball.

Still, even with those limitations, he’s been an important part of what the Thunder have built. And for the Lakers, that makes him a sensible name to monitor. He may not be the cleanest fit, but if he becomes available, he’d be a wise target.

Thunder Lose To Lakers But Two Young Names Gave Fans Something

The Thunder opened Las Vegas Summer League with a loss to the Lakers, but the box score still offered a few reasons to keep watching. Oklahoma City fell 96-84 in its first game in the desert, and the offense got steady production from a handful of young players trying to carve out roles in a crowded summer rotation.

Rookie Bennett Stirtz led the way with 18 points, while Brooks Barnhizer added 12 points and 10 rebounds to give the Thunder some needed physicality. Christoph Tilly also chipped in with 10 points and seven rebounds, giving Oklahoma City a little frontcourt presence even in a game that never really tilted its way. [Read more 🡒]

Thunder Fans Have Every Reason To Worry About Ajay Mitchell Again

Ajay Mitchells first two seasons with the Thunder have already given Oklahoma City a reason to keep one eye on his health, even as his talent makes him an intriguing part of the backcourt picture. The point guard has been on the floor for just 57.4 percent of the teams games over that span, a number that naturally sharpens the focus on durability whenever his name comes up.

Mitchell is also working his way back from the right calf strain he picked up in the Conference Finals, and the bigger concern is not just this one injury but what it says about his availability going forward. For a Thunder front office that has to balance upside with reliability, his injury history could become part of a much larger decision when the time comes to sort out his next payday and long-term place on the roster.
