Amen Thompson’s new deal in Houston has only turned up the heat on Oklahoma City’s front office.
For the Thunder, the contract clock is already ticking on Cason Wallace and Ajay Mitchell, two young pieces who have become important parts of the rotation. Wallace is in the final season of his rookie-scale deal, while Mitchell is in year two of a three-year contract that includes a club option for 2027-28.
Wallace can sign a rookie extension with Oklahoma City any time between now and October 19. Mitchell, by contrast, gives the Thunder a little more breathing room, since he would have all of next summer to work out a new deal.
Still, the message from Thompson’s five-year, $208 million extension with the Rockets is hard to ignore. He and Wallace share similar defensive credentials, and that kind of payday could become the starting point for what Wallace will want on his next contract. If the number climbs from there, the Thunder could be staring at a tougher and more expensive decision later.
That is exactly why locking Wallace in before the deadline looks so important. If Oklahoma City passes on an extension and lets him get to free agency next offseason, the team risks getting pulled into a bidding war it may not want to fight.
The same basic logic applies to Mitchell, even if his situation is not quite as immediate. He still has another year before the Thunder have to make the call, but the broader point does not change.
Both players are viewed as young, ascending talents who have already earned real roles in Oklahoma City’s championship-winning rotation. And with salaries rising across the league under the latest CBA, keeping them in Thunder blue on team-friendly extensions is the cleanest path forward for Sam Presti and the front office.
The Thunder may not love the price tag, but the alternative could be even worse.
