Oklahoma’s latest step forward was enough to earn the Sooners a little respect in the US LBM Coaches Poll.
After beating Mississippi State 23-15 in Starkville on Saturday, Oklahoma moved to 4-3 overall and 2-2 in SEC play. That result brought the Sooners one vote in the newest poll, a small but notable bump after a season that has swung back and forth from week to week.
The Sooners have been stuck in that win-loss rhythm all year. They let gettable games slip against Michigan and Kentucky, then pulled off the upset of Texas in the Red River Showdown. Saturday’s win gave Oklahoma a chance to build something steadier, and the back half of the schedule still leaves room for that if the Sooners can string together wins.
That path won’t be easy. Oklahoma still has games left against ranked opponents Florida, Ole Miss, and Missouri. South Carolina, which the Sooners face in Week 9, is also drawing votes after its win over Tennessee.
At the top of the rankings, Miami kept the No. 1 spot after collecting 67 of a possible 74 first-place votes. Ohio State stayed right behind the Hurricanes, followed by Georgia, Indiana, and Utah to complete the top five.
The rest of the top 10 includes Notre Dame, UCLA, Kentucky, BYU, and Alabama, with several teams making noticeable moves this week. Utah, UCLA, Kentucky, and BYU are all staking a claim among college football’s best teams in 2026.

Thunder Title Hopes Just Took An Early Hit
The early part of the NBA season has already been a grind for almost every contender, with roughly 15 percent of players across the league listed with injuries or illnesses and several former All-Stars expected to miss weeks. For Oklahoma City, the concern goes beyond the usual reshuffling of a long season, because the Thunder have built so much of their identity around depth, versatility, and the ability to keep pressure on opponents even when the rotation gets thin.
Jalen Williams is among the names whose absence is already reshaping the wider title picture, and it only adds to the challenge for teams trying to survive the opening stretch with their hopes intact. With other big pieces around the league also sidelined, from Kawhi Leonard to Anthony Edwards and Tyrese Haliburton, the standings can turn quickly this time of year, and the Thunder are now facing the same question everyone else is: how much margin is left when key players start disappearing for extended stretches? Thunder Starting Five Suddenly Matters A Lot More In Dallas
The Thunder open a three-game road trip in Dallas with the kind of short-handed setup that can change a rotation fast, especially this late in the schedule. Oklahoma City is already dealing with the season-ending losses of Jalen Williams and Cason Wallace, and the injury list leaves the group facing a tougher test right away against the Mavericks before the trip continues with games against Houston and Cleveland.
Mark Daigneault had to sort through those absences before tip-off, which only adds to the uncertainty around how Oklahoma City will handle the first stop on the road. Ajay Mitchell is available after being upgraded from questionable with an ankle sprain, giving the Thunder at least one more option as they try to navigate a stretch that now asks more of the players left standing. Ajay Mitchell Suddenly Faces A Massive Thunder Opportunity
The Thunders backcourt took a devastating hit against the Clippers, and the ripple effect was immediate for a team already built around depth and next-man-up responsibility. With Jalen Williams and Cason Wallace both hurt, Oklahoma City suddenly had to reshuffle minutes in a hurry, and Ajay Mitchell was one of the players thrust into a far bigger role.
Mitchell answered with a strong showing in the win over Phoenix, the kind of performance that naturally gets people around the league talking about a bigger breakout. He has already shown he can handle pressure when Williams has been out, and his playoff flashes have only added to the intrigue, leaving open the question of just how far his rise can go if the Thunder keep leaning on him.
