Russell Westbrook’s basketball future took a sharp turn on Wednesday afternoon, when the Thunder great announced he was done playing after a summer full of uncertainty.
Westbrook had been sending a different message just days earlier. Asked about what came next, he made it clear he still loved the game and was open to whatever might happen.
“I love playing basketball. And if it happens, it works. That is my plan,” Westbrook said.
That openness came with a catch, though. Westbrook was looking for a real role, not just a seat on the bench, as he worked through free agency. According to The Stein Line’s Marc Stein, the Sacramento Kings had shown strong interest in bringing him in as a veteran presence for rookie sensation Darius Acuff Jr.
“The Stein Line first reported on Aug. 3 that Sacramento has sounded Westbrook out about a possible second season with the Kings ... as they search for a veteran mentor to prized rookie Darius Acuff Jr. It remains to be seen if Westbrook, who did not sign with Sacramento last season until mid-October, would be amenable to coming back in a lesser role under coach Doug Christie than he had in 2025-26,” Stein wrote.
Then came the announcement itself. Westbrook posted a brief message that made the decision official.

Westbrook exits as the NBA’s all-time leader in triple-doubles with 209, a staggering mark that speaks to how complete his game was at its peak. He also won the 2017 MVP award with the Thunder, the team he represented for 11 seasons.
