Topic, who wrapped up the night with nine points and two assists, was instrumental in closing out the game against the Nets. Daigneault praised the young guard's ability to organize the team and his understanding of the game, even at this early stage of his career.
"In today's NBA, pure point guards are a rare breed," Daigneault noted. "Nikola is one of those guys who can truly run a team.
He knows how to get us organized on the floor and has the passing skills to match. He's got a lot to learn, especially in reading defenses as they start to adapt to him, but he's off to an impressive start."
Despite the challenges Topic has faced, including an ACL injury and a battle with testicular cancer, his resilience and skill have shone through. Daigneault emphasized the importance of giving Topic time to develop, acknowledging his natural feel for the game and his fearless approach.
Topic's performance was highlighted by his efficient shooting, going 4-for-6 from the field and 1-for-2 from beyond the arc, along with grabbing three rebounds in just 11 minutes off the bench. While Jared McCain led the team with a season-high 21 points, Topic's contributions were crucial in maintaining the Thunder's momentum.
In his first postgame press conference, Topic expressed gratitude towards the Thunder fans for their support during his NBA debut. "It was an awesome moment," he shared. "I'll remember that for the rest of my life."
Reflecting on his return to basketball after nearly two years, Topic admitted to feeling a bit rusty initially. "It was weird at first, getting back into the game," he said.
"I was catching myself doing things I hadn't done before. But with each game, I'm getting better."
