Nikola Topic Just Reached An Important Step In His Thunder Return

Nikola Topic embarks on a crucial G League stint with the OKC Blue as he battles back from numerous setbacks in a pivotal contract year.

The Oklahoma City Thunder are taking another step toward getting Nikola Topic back on the floor.

On Saturday, the team announced that Topic has been assigned to the G League, a move that points him toward a return after missing the entire 2026-27 regular season because of back surgery in June 2026. He is expected to play for the OKC Blue in their next game against the Osceola Magic on Sunday, Nov. 8.

Topic’s path to this point has been anything but smooth. The 21-year-old was the No. 12 pick in the 2024 NBA draft, but injuries and illness have kept interrupting his start.

He sat out the entire 2024-25 season after tearing his ACL, then appeared in only 10 games in the 2025-26 season while working his way back from a testicular cancer diagnosis in Oct. 2025.

He returned before the 2026 NBA All-Star break after beating that diagnosis.

This latest setback came after the back surgery he had this past offseason. He had originally been expected to be ready for training camp, but that timeline never materialized, and he has now missed OKC’s first 10-plus games.

There’s also a contract wrinkle in the background. After the Thunder declined his 2027-28 team option, Topic is now in a contract year and could be in line for his first real stretch of serious NBA minutes.

He already has some familiarity with the Blue, having spent time there last season as part of his recovery while going through several rounds of chemotherapy in a three-month span. That should make this assignment a little less foreign, with the hope that he can shake off the rust and start putting up big numbers.

Thunder May Have Found Shai Gilgeous-Alexanders Surprise Scoring Help

With the Thunder shorthanded in the middle of a stretch that has tested their depth, a new frontcourt option has started to emerge alongside Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. The injuries have thinned Oklahoma Citys rotation and forced the team to look harder at who can take on more responsibility, especially on the offensive end, where every extra source of scoring matters.

Aday Mara gave them a reason to keep looking in his direction in a win over the Washington Wizards, showing enough poise and activity to suggest there may be more there than just spot duty. Oklahoma City is now weighing whether to expand his role as it tries to keep the offense afloat while key pieces remain out, and that kind of internal answer can matter even more when the roster is stretched this thin. Jared McCain Is Giving The Thunder Exactly What Shai Needed

Jared McCain gave Oklahoma City the kind of early lift that can make a lopsided game feel settled before it really starts. In the Thunders 124-97 win over the Memphis Grizzlies in the NBA Cup West Group B stage, McCain finished with 21 points, five rebounds, four steals and a block, and his first-quarter burst helped set the tone for a night when the ball kept moving and the pressure kept coming from both ends.

What stood out afterward was how naturally McCain fit into the Thunders team-first rhythm, especially with the offense spreading the load around Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. McCain pointed to the cohesion on both sides of the floor, and it was easy to see why this version of Oklahoma City can make life easier on its star while still forcing opponents to deal with waves of different threats. Kenrich Williams Has Become Crucial To OKC's Fast Start

Kenrich Williams has quietly turned into one of the most important pieces of Oklahoma Citys fast start, stepping into a regular starting role and giving the Thunder a little of everything while the lineup has been in flux. His value has shown up on both ends, where he has helped steady the group with defense, timely offense and the kind of veteran poise that can keep a young team from getting rattled.

What has made the fit especially useful is the way Williams has blended into the group without needing the ball to dominate. He has been able to slide between multiple spots and has developed strong chemistry with Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, which has made his transition into the starting five look natural rather than forced, even as Oklahoma City continues to navigate injuries and shuffle pieces around him.
