Mark Daigneaults Preseason Setup Says A Lot About OKCs Title Push

The Oklahoma City Thunder's intentional preseason scheduling could be the key to their championship ambitions.

The Oklahoma City Thunder’s preseason schedule is built a little differently this year, and that’s by design.

It starts Tuesday in Tulsa, where the Thunder will face the Pelicans in a neutral-site game meant to give fans across Oklahoma a chance to see the state’s lone major professional sports franchise. That matchup opens a five-game exhibition slate, and it also kicks off the first of two back-to-back sets Oklahoma City will play before the 2026-27 regular season.

That part stands out. The Thunder are used to stacking preseason games, but two back-to-backs - both with some level of travel attached, even if one is only a 90-minute bus ride north - is a noticeable wrinkle.

Still, the team isn’t treating it like a problem. It’s part of the plan.

At Sunday’s practice, Mark Daigneault explained the thinking behind it.

“We make our own preseason schedule, so the back-to-backs are actually by design. We’re not going to play everybody in every game.

At least the high-minute rotation guys. We will play some guys five games, but the high-minute guys don't play in every game," Daigneault explained at Sunday's practice.

"So condensing it actually gives us more practice time on either end of those games. We use it as a five-game thing where are we are just trying to get everybody what they need.

Some people need experience and game time, some people just need a bare minimum to get themselves ready for the season."

That’s the key here: the Thunder want the preseason to serve different purposes for different players. The regulars won’t be logging heavy minutes in every exhibition, which softens the grind of those back-to-backs. Meanwhile, the compressed schedule leaves more room for practice time before and after those games.

And for a roster with plenty of young players, that matters. Oklahoma City has several rookies who could use the reps, including Aday Mara, Bennett Stirtz, and Otega Oweh. The preseason also gives the staff a chance to test out different roles in lower-pressure settings, where the result of the game itself isn’t the point.

The Thunder are heading into a season with title expectations hanging over them, and everything about this setup points to preparation. The preseason, the practices, the schedule construction - it’s all aimed at getting the group ready for the 82-game grind and another run at the mountaintop they reached in 2025.

Jalen Williams Could Decide A Crucial Thunder Lineup Call

With Lu Dort out of the starting lineup, the Thunder are weighing one of their first real rotation calls of the preseason, and the decision at shooting guard may say plenty about how they want to open the year. The choice comes down to two very different options, with Cason Wallace bringing the defensive edge Oklahoma City has valued and Ajay Mitchell offering a more offense-minded look.

Jalen Williams may end up being the swing factor in how Mark Daigneault sorts it out. If Williams is ready to carry a heavier load physically, the Thunder could afford to lean more toward Mitchells scoring presence in the first five, while a less certain recovery could push the staff toward Wallace and the steadier defensive fit beside the rest of the core. Jared McCain Faces Real Pressure In Bigger Thunder Role

Jared McCain spent media day sounding like a young guard who understands what comes with opportunity. With Isaiah Joe gone, the Oklahoma City backcourt has a clearer opening, and McCain is expected to shoulder a bigger load heading into the 2026-27 season. He talked about his offseason work and preparation, framing the months before camp as a chance to get himself ready for the kind of responsibility that can change a rotation fast.

What stood out most was how much of McCains outlook seemed shaped by the people around him, especially Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. In a season where the minutes, expectations and scrutiny all rise with the role, McCain credited the veteran star with helping him stay even through the humbling stretches that come with life in the NBA. For a Thunder team counting on another young piece to grow up quickly, that kind of steadiness may matter as much as the shot-making. [Read more 🡒]
