Defensive grit meets offensive struggles as Luguentz Dort's shooting slump impacts team strategy and flow.
Luguentz Dort has been a beloved figure in Oklahoma City since joining as an undrafted rookie back in 2019. However, his role seems to be shifting.
Recently, Dort logged just 17 minutes against Minnesota and 18 minutes versus Orlando, even though both games were tight until the fourth quarter. Notably, foul trouble wasn't the issue here.
Dort's perimeter defense is still top-tier, but his offensive game is lagging. He's shooting a mere 37.4% from the field and 33% from beyond the arc this season, while also posting his lowest assist percentage since his rookie year.
In terms of Offensive Net Points per 100 Possessions, Dort ranks 231st out of 234 qualified players, with only a few trailing behind him. That's a tough spot to be in.
His shooting struggles allow opponents to exploit defensive matchups, often placing their center on him. This tactic clogs the paint, restricting driving lanes and weakening Chet Holmgren's effectiveness by matching him with a wing defender who can neutralize his mobility advantage.
With Oklahoma City's deep backcourt, it's hard to justify giving Dort 30 minutes per game when his offensive impact is lacking. Rising star Ajay Mitchell, along with Cason Wallace, who brings elite defense and turnover creation, offer more offensive potential. Plus, Isaiah Joe and Jared McCain are sharpshooters who keep defenses on their toes.
This isn't to say Dort should be sidelined entirely. His ability to guard big, physical scorers will be invaluable come playoff time, and he still has games where he shines. Expect coach Mark Daigneault to adjust his minutes based on matchups.
Dort's playing time will hinge on the opponent. For instance, he'll likely see significant action against teams like the Lakers, where his defense against players like Luka Dončić is crucial. Conversely, against teams like San Antonio, where Victor Wembanyama dominates the paint, his minutes might dwindle due to his shooting woes.
Even if Dort faces challenges in the playoffs and potentially moves on during free agency this summer, should Oklahoma City decline his team option, his legacy as a Thunder legend is secure. The "Luuuuuu" chants will continue to echo in Paycom Center and beyond, celebrating his role in the franchise's first championship.
