Jaylin Williams is heading into a season that could decide how long he stays in Oklahoma City.
The Thunder have spent the offseason juggling two priorities at once: staying under the second apron and keeping a roster good enough to chase a title. Most of the group for next season looks settled, but not everybody is in the same spot. For some players, this year is less about comfort and more about proving they belong.
Williams sits squarely in that category. He’s entering the second year of a three-year deal, but the final season is a team option, which gives the Thunder the ability to move on if they choose. The Arkansas product has already carved out a real role in the Thunder’s rotation. He’s been a steady piece in the middle of OKC’s small-ball looks, and his size, toughness and ability to battle bigger players have made him valuable over the last couple of seasons. That versatility helped him log 19.6 minutes per game last season.
There may be a wrinkle to his role this year, though. Oklahoma City is adding frontcourt help with Aday Mara and the debut of Thomas Sorber, and that could push Williams into more minutes at small forward instead of power forward or center.
If that happens, the scoring part of his game may matter even more. Williams just posted the best scoring average of his career at 7.2 points per game while shooting 42.3% from the field and 38.3% from 3. Those numbers give him a case, especially with some key departures opening up minutes.
The message from the Thunder’s offseason has been clear: this is a business. Williams now has a season to make the case that he fits the price tag and deserves to remain part of the group beyond it.
