Jalen Williams Gets Honest On Injury Return

Thunder's Jalen Williams remains confident and focused on finding his rhythm independently, despite minute restrictions and injury setbacks, as the team eyes a consecutive championship.

In the heart of Boston, with 28 regular-season games behind him and nine to go, Oklahoma City Thunder forward Jalen Williams is gearing up for the challenges ahead. The Thunder's impressive 12-game winning streak came to an end with a 119-109 loss to the Celtics, but Williams found a silver lining in his post-game chat with Jayson Tatum. Both All-NBA forwards are navigating their return from long-term injuries, eyeing a deep playoff run.

For the Thunder, the dream of consecutive championships is alive and well. With Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, the reigning MVP, leading the charge, he's favored to clinch the title again.

Yet, in a candid moment with reporters, Gilgeous-Alexander mentioned the need to ignite Williams' offensive spark. Williams, however, took a different view, emphasizing his own role in finding his rhythm.

“He's a great teammate. It's hard to pinpoint what he sees as his responsibility,” Williams explained.

“When I’m on the court, I’m looking for him to set me up, but I let him do his thing. I’ve never struggled with that dynamic.

He makes the game easier, but I don’t need him to hand me shots. I can create my own opportunities.

Maybe it’s more noticeable because I haven’t played much this year.”

With minute restrictions in place, Williams acknowledges the challenge of finding his flow, but he's determined to carve out his path.

“He's such a special player, making the right plays and scoring,” Williams continued. “I don’t rely on him to get me going, but he excels in distributing and scoring. At this level, you need to find new ways to elevate your game.”

Head coach Mark Daigneault highlighted defensive issues in the loss to Boston, and Williams shared insights from his conversation with Tatum, praising his return from a ruptured Achilles.

“It’s remarkable. I hope he stays healthy for the rest of the season,” Williams said.

“Seeing him come back and play is inspiring. He’s not fully back yet, and he’d likely agree, but his movement and ability to get shots off are impressive.”

As the Thunder prepare to host the Bulls on Friday, Williams is focused on finding his groove and contributing to the team’s success.
