Jalen Williams was putting together the kind of performance that reminds you just how high his ceiling is. Smooth, efficient, and in full control, the 24-year-old forward was nearly perfect against the Suns-dropping 28 points on 11-of-12 shooting-before a familiar and frustrating sight returned: a hamstring issue.
Midway through the Thunder’s 136-109 blowout win, Williams came up gingerly after a transition layup. He walked slowly back on defense, favoring his leg, and eventually made his way to the locker room.
It didn’t take long for the team to rule him out for the night, and by the next day, the Thunder had listed him out for their upcoming matchup against the Bucks. The official word: another hamstring strain.
He'll be re-evaluated after the All-Star break.
It’s a tough break for both Williams and the Thunder. This wasn’t just a good game-it was a statement.
Williams looked like the dynamic, two-way force who helped power OKC’s deep playoff run last year. His footwork was sharp, his touch around the rim was elite, and he was making it all look easy.
But just as he was finding his rhythm again, the injury bug bit back.
This latest setback marks the second time he’s strained the same hamstring, and it adds to what’s already been a stop-and-start season. Williams missed the first 19 games of the year while recovering from dual wrist surgeries-injuries he played through during last season’s playoff push. Now, with two hamstring strains on the books, he’s been limited to just 26 games so far.
For a young Thunder team with real aspirations, Williams is a key piece. His versatility on both ends, his ability to create his own shot, and his chemistry with Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Chet Holmgren give OKC one of the most exciting young cores in the league. But that only matters if he’s on the floor.
The Thunder have been cautious with their stars this season, and that approach won’t change here. With the All-Star break right around the corner, the team has a built-in window to give Williams time to heal without rushing him back. But make no mistake-his health will be one of the biggest storylines to watch as the Thunder gear up for the stretch run.
If Williams can stay healthy, he’s a game-changer. The kind of player who can swing a playoff series.
But for now, the focus shifts back to recovery. Again.
