Former Oklahoma State Star Suffers Alarming Injury

With a competitive position at stake, linebacker Malcolm Rodriguez's early exit from practice has left the Detroit Lions assessing both his health and their defensive strategy.

The Lions’ linebacker picture took another hit Tuesday, with Malcolm Rodriguez leaving practice early to be evaluated for an ankle injury during the team’s second padded session of training camp.

Rodriguez is supposed to be part of the fight for the third linebacker job in Kelvin Sheppard’s base 4-3 look, but now his status is suddenly worth watching. The team has not officially reported how serious the injury is.

For Rodriguez, this comes after a career in Detroit that has already had plenty of twists. The Lions picked him in the sixth round in 2022, and he won a starting job as a rookie when Sheppard was still coaching the position. He turned in a solid first year, but the roster around him shifted quickly after that.

Detroit used a first-round pick on Jack Campbell the following offseason, and Derrick Barnes also grew into a dependable piece in the defense. That pushed Rodriguez down the depth chart behind Campbell, Barnes and veteran Alex Anzalone.

His role expanded again in 2024 when injuries hit Barnes and Anzalone, both of whom landed on injured reserve. Then Rodriguez’s own season was cut short by a torn ACL on Thanksgiving.

That injury carried over into the start of the 2025 season, and Rodriguez did not get into a game until Week 12 against the New York Giants. Even with the stop-and-start nature of his time in Detroit, he has put together a career line of 163 combined tackles, three sacks and 11 tackles for loss. He also picked off a pass in the Lions’ NFC Championship loss to the San Francisco 49ers in 2023.

Detroit brought him back this offseason on a one-year deal after his rookie contract expired, and he was set to compete for the third spot alongside Campbell, who was an All-Pro in 2025, and Barnes.

The Lions have already been dealing with linebacker attrition in camp. Rookie Jimmy Rolder is out for a stretch with a hamstring injury, and Detroit answered by signing veteran Devin White to help round out the room.

White now looms as another challenger for Rodriguez’s job. He brings a strong résumé, including a career-best tackle total last season with the Las Vegas Raiders and a Second Team All-Pro nod earlier in his career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Detroit’s injury list doesn’t stop there. Derrick Moore, Anthony Firkser and Sione Vaki are also dealing with injuries.

Cason Wallace Just Became Too Important For Thunder Fans To Ignore

Cason Wallace has moved from promising rotation piece to someone the Thunder can no longer treat like a secondary storyline. After earning All-Defense honors in his breakout 2025-26 season, he has become a bigger part of what Oklahoma City wants to do on both ends, not just as a disruptive defender but as a guard taking on more offensive responsibility as the roster around him shifts.

The offseason changes only sharpen the focus on what Wallace can become next. The Thunder appear intent on building with him in mind, and his defensive value already gives that plan a sturdy base. The next step is easier to see than it is to finish: if his outside shooting comes along, his rise could accelerate quickly. [Read more 🡒]

Kevin Durant Just Reopened A Thunder Wound OKC Fans Know Well

Kevin Durant has a way of bringing old Thunder feelings back to the surface, and his latest comments did exactly that. While discussing LeBron James' move to the 76ers, Durant drew a line back to his own departure from Oklahoma City for Golden State, framing both decisions as examples of teams gathering multiple high-scoring stars in one place.

For Thunder fans, the comparison is hard to miss because it goes straight to one of the most painful chapters in franchise history. There is also a key difference between the two moves, one that makes Durants point land differently in Oklahoma City than it might elsewhere, and it is the sort of wrinkle that keeps this debate from going away quietly. Jalen Williams Is Giving Thunder Fans Reason To Feel Better

Jalen Williams gave the Thunder plenty to feel good about last season even while his body kept interrupting the rhythm. He missed significant time with two wrist surgeries and four hamstring strains, yet still came away with a championship and showed why Oklahoma City views him as a cornerstone moving forward. This offseason, he has been back in the lab with Nem Ilic, the trainer best known for working with Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, with the focus squarely on getting Williams stronger and more reliable for the long haul.

The encouraging part for Thunder fans is that the recovery and training work appears to be trending the right way. Ilics recent updates have pointed to steady progress in Williams offseason program, a welcome sign for a player whose talent has never been in doubt but whose availability has been tested. For a team with title expectations, any hint that Williams is moving closer to a cleaner, sturdier stretch is reason to pay attention. [Read more 🡒]
