Thunder's Trade for Ajay Mitchell: A Win-Win for OKC and Suns
The Oklahoma City Thunder's decision to trade for Ajay Mitchell during the 2024 draft has proven to be a masterstroke. Mitchell has not only impressed but has become a key player in OKC's title-winning lineup. As he continues to shine in his sophomore year, the trade's impact is undeniable.
Yet, the Thunder aren't the only team benefiting from this deal. The Phoenix Suns have also found success, thanks to their acquisition of Oso Ighodaro, drafted 40th overall as part of the Mitchell trade package.
Initially, Ighodaro's rookie season was a quiet one, with fluctuating stints in the G League and modest averages of 4.2 points and 3.6 rebounds. However, his second season has been a revelation. With 21 starts and an average of 22.2 minutes per game, Ighodaro has become a pivotal player for the Suns.
Flying under the radar, Ighodaro ranks second in both defensive and offensive ratings for the Suns among players with 50 or more games. He's also third in plus-minus, trailing only Collin Gillespie and Devin Booker.
Since stepping into a full-time starting role on March 5, Ighodaro has elevated his game, averaging 9.7 points, 6.1 rebounds, 3.6 assists, and nearly a block per game while shooting an impressive 70.1 percent from the field.
With Phoenix sitting in the seventh seed of the Western Conference at 42-33, they've secured a spot in the Play-In Tournament. This positions them as potential first-round opponents for the Thunder, who are locked in as either the first or second seed. Such a matchup would see the Thunder face off against the very player they helped the Suns acquire, adding an intriguing twist to the postseason narrative.
