Aday Mara didn’t need much time to leave a mark in his Oklahoma City Thunder debut. In 12 minutes against the San Antonio Spurs, the 7-foot-3 rookie delivered the moment everyone will remember: a block at the rim on Victor Wembanyama.
That sequence stood out in a 116-104 Thunder win over the team that knocked OKC out of the Western Conference Finals earlier this year. Mara finished with seven points on 3-for-4 shooting, and the performance came with more than just one eye-catching highlight. He looked like a real part of the rotation, not just a specialist brought in for one matchup.
Wembanyama had a rough night by his standards, finishing with 12 points and shooting 1-for-13 from the field. Mara’s size gave Oklahoma City something it lacked last season, especially in the postseason when Chet Holmgren drew criticism for struggling to contain Wembanyama. The rookie’s arrival gives the Thunder another big body who can make life harder in the paint.
Bill Simmons made that point on his podcast, calling Mara’s showing “important.” Simmons said: “They take him [in the Draft] because they need him for for this. And watching him go against Wemby, he only played 10 minutes, but it was it was 10 loud minutes, and it really felt important.
“It was the first time you saw somebody in OKC who was able to go toe to toe, height to height with him and make Wemby at least think about what he was doing.
“He looked great in the preseason. He’s clearly going to play.
I thought the fact that he played in this game and played meaningful minutes was the second most meaningful thing about this game for OKC. The first thing was just Jalen Williams, who they didn’t really have last year, being back to where he was.”
Mark Daigneault saw it the same way. The OKC head coach said: “He had one of the critical stretches of the game. He didn’t seem overwhelmed by the atmosphere of the game.
“I’m not really surprised by how he’s performed in the preseason. I think he’s proven to be a very impactful player. His minutes weren’t high tonight, but his impact was.”
Williams’ return matters just as much for Oklahoma City’s bigger picture. He was a key piece in the Thunder’s 2024-25 title run, but a wrist injury and recurring hamstring issues limited him to 33 regular-season games in 2025-26. Even in the playoffs, he never fully found his rhythm, appearing in only five of 15 games.
Against San Antonio, Williams scored 12 points and grabbed seven rebounds, while his presence helped take some pressure off Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, who led OKC with 32.

Thunder Face An Early Test As Fans Await Key Lineup Answers
The Thunder get an early measuring-stick matchup Thursday night when Denver comes to the Paycom Center, giving Oklahoma City a chance to back up its season-opening win over San Antonio with another statement against one of the Wests established powers. It is still early, but games like this tend to reveal a little more about where a team stands, especially when the opponent is just beginning its own season and the atmosphere at home is set to feel more like a postseason preview than a routine October stop.
The bigger question for Oklahoma City is not just the opponent, but the available pieces. The injury report already has a few moving parts on both sides, and the projected lineups suggest both teams may have to adjust on the fly as they sort through availability and rotation decisions. Fans tuning in will get the full stage on national television, but the real intrigue is whether the Thunder can keep the momentum going while waiting for some of their key lineup answers to settle in. Nuggets Opener Has An Unexpected Subplot Tied To The Thunder
The Nuggets season opener against Oklahoma City already had a little extra edge, and now it comes with another subplot for Thunder fans to track. Denver has listed Spencer Jones as questionable because of bilateral hamstring injury management, while guard Julian Strawther is out with a left knee sprain, adding another layer of uncertainty to a game that will open the regular season spotlight between two teams with plenty of familiarity.
For the Thunder, the injury picture is familiar in its own way, with Otega Oweh, Thomas Sorber and Nikola Topic all sidelined as they continue recovering from surgeries. Jones is the name to watch here, especially given how this matchup has taken on added offseason context, and his status could affect how Denver lines up when the ball goes up for a game that already had plenty of attention around it. Aday Mara Faces A Brutal Thunder Test In Home Opener
Aday Maras home opener arrives with a very different kind of assignment, and for a rookie trying to carve out a role, the timing could not be much tougher. After showing some defensive promise in his previous game against Victor Wembanyama, Mara heads into a matchup with the Denver Nuggets and Nikola Jokic, a far more established test for a young center still learning what NBA possessions demand on a nightly basis.
Maras last outing offered a glimpse of why Oklahoma City is interested in his development, but it also came with a reminder that opportunity can be fleeting. His minutes were limited, and there is no guarantee he gets the same kind of runway against Denver, where the Thunder may need to balance his growth against the realities of facing one of the leagues most demanding stars.
