The Edmonton Oilers' 2024-25 season has been a test of resilience, with the team facing an avalanche of injuries to their top players. This unfortunate trend includes the sidelining of marquee talents like Connor McDavid, Leon Draisaitl, and Mattias Ekholm, along with key contributors such as Zach Hyman, Evander Kane, and Stuart Skinner.
Ekholm’s absence looms large as the Oilers prepare to battle the Los Angeles Kings in the first round of the playoffs. The veteran defenseman, a stabilizing force on the blue line and one of the team leaders, is confirmed out for the series, and there’s a growing belief his season might be done entirely. Losing Ekholm is undoubtedly a significant setback for the Oilers, demanding that others step up in his stead.
Even amidst adversity, there's good news on the injury front. Friday's practice in San Jose saw some familiar faces return to the ice, just in time to bolster the squad for Game 1 against the Kings on Monday night.
One of the most significant returns is Zach Hyman, who missed the final three games of the regular season. Despite his absence for parts of the season, Hyman finished second on the Oilers with 27 goals, showcasing his importance in their quest for a second straight Stanley Cup Final appearance.
Last year, he topped the playoff charts with 16 goals. In practice, he was reunited with McDavid and Connor Brown on the top line, hinting at the firepower they hope to unleash.
Evander Kane, a polarizing figure and playoff X-factor, was also present at practice. Known for his rugged play and knack for getting under opponents’ skin, Kane’s presence is exactly the type of advantage Edmonton seeks in a grueling playoff series. Though he hasn’t been cleared for contact yet, it's clear the Oilers believe he’ll join the battle against the Kings sooner rather than later.
Defensively, Jake Walman and John Klingberg's pairings with Brett Kulak and Cam Dineen hold strategic significance. Walman, in particular, is poised to fill a crucial role on the second pairing, especially with Darnell Nurse needing to step into the first pairing alongside Evan Bouchard due to Ekholm’s absence.
Adding another layer of intrigue, Trent Frederic participated in practice. While his impact remains uncertain, the Oilers will be hoping that this trade acquisition can turn things around and contribute meaningfully in the playoffs.
Collectively, the Oilers are clawing their way back to health, even as they contend with Ekholm’s significant absence. As Hyman pointed out in a sentiment echoed by his teammates: “We didn’t look too wounded on the ice today.
We’re good. We’re obviously missing a big piece on the back end (in Ekholm), but we just have to pull through and everybody just has to step up.”
With the playoffs underway, it’s all hands on deck for Edmonton as they aim to overcome adversity and chase championship glory.
