Urban Meyer sees Saturday night’s Texas-Ohio State showdown as about as tight as it gets, but when he finally had to choose, he stayed with the Buckeyes.
On the latest episode of "The Triple Option," Meyer called the matchup a "coin toss" and said the quarterbacks and the crowd could decide it. He also pointed to how much tougher Darrell K.
Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium has become for visitors, revising his old view of Austin from what he called a "wine-and-cheese crowd" to a place that now carries real edge. Meyer said a true home-field advantage in a game like this can be worth five to seven points.
Even with that, it was Ohio State for him.
"I'm going to pick the Buckeyes, but I think it's going to be a walk-off win for whoever wins," Meyer said.
That pick comes with obvious history behind it. Meyer went 83-9 in seven seasons at Ohio State, won three Big Ten titles and captured the 2014 national championship. The Buckeyes also arrive with a two-game winning streak against Texas and a 3-2 edge in the all-time series.
The game brings Julian Sayin and Arch Manning back into the same spotlight one year after both quarterbacks made their first season-opening starts in Columbus. In that meeting, Ohio State took a conservative approach around Sayin, controlled the pace and shut Texas out through three quarters on the way to a 14-7 win.
Meyer’s read on the rematch is simple: neither quarterback has to do everything, but both have to avoid the one mistake that flips a close game.
"It's going to be the battle of the quarterbacks," Meyer said. "I'm not saying they have to win it, but they can't lose it."
Both looked sharp in Week 1, though the stage was nowhere near the same. Sayin went 21 of 25 for 320 yards and three touchdowns in Ohio State’s 56-3 win over Ball State. Manning threw for 305 yards and tied a career high with four touchdown passes in Texas’ 59-7 win over Texas State.
Meyer wasn’t buying much from the Buckeyes’ opener, even brushing it off as a scrimmage when Rob Stone started running through the numbers.
He also pushed back on the idea that Manning alone was to blame for Texas’ problems in last season’s loss to Ohio State. After going back through the game, Meyer said the Longhorns’ receivers didn’t give Manning enough help.
"You can blame Arch Manning all you want," Meyer said. "People weren't open. That's not the quarterback's fault."
Texas has tried to address that issue through the transfer portal. Cam Coleman, the former Auburn receiver, caught three passes for 70 yards and two touchdowns in his first game for the Longhorns.
Hollywood Smothers, who came over from NC State, ran for 70 yards and added two touchdown catches. Ryan Wingo finished with 121 receiving yards and a touchdown.
Ohio State had its own answer in Jeremiah Smith, who piled up 151 yards and two touchdowns before halftime.
Texas still has the kind of home record that makes opponents notice. The Longhorns have won 21 of their last 22 games in Austin. But Ohio State has already shown it can slow them down, holding Texas to 21 total points across its two recent wins.

Ohio State Heads To Texas With One Early Concern Looming
Texas opened the season with a win over Texas State and now turns its attention to a Week 2 home game against Ohio State, a matchup that already carries plenty of early-season intrigue. The Buckeyes, meanwhile, are coming off their own opener against Ball State and will be trying to settle in on both sides of the ball after making changes along the offensive line and defense.
One of the first things Ohio State will have to monitor in Austin is Texas health on defense and in the backfield. Running back Derrek Cooper is expected to miss the game after an ankle injury, and safety Yaheim Riley also did not dress in the opener, leaving the Longhorns with some uncertainty to sort through before the Buckeyes arrive. Ohio State Faces One Big Jeremiah Smith Question Against Texas
Ohio State has already seen what happens when Jeremiah Smith is held in check against Texas, and it has still found a way to win those matchups anyway. Even so, the Buckeyes are treating the upcoming meeting as a chance to change the script, with Ryan Day and quarterback Julian Sayin both acknowledging how much Smith can tilt a game when he is featured properly. With new coordinators on both sides, there is at least some expectation that the chess match will look different this time around.
For Smith, the challenge is familiar: Texas has made life difficult, and Ohio State has not yet gotten the kind of sustained production from its star receiver that it would prefer in this series. The Buckeyes know they cannot keep leaving that part of the offense to chance, especially with the stakes rising and the defense across from them still built to limit explosive plays.
