For the third straight season, Ohio State and Texas are back on the same stage, and this one has the kind of buzz that travels far beyond Austin. The Longhorns are favored by 1.5 points, ESPN’s College GameDay is headed to town, and the Buckeyes will walk into DKR-Texas Memorial Stadium for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff in what shapes up as the weekend’s biggest game.
Texas has plenty to sell in this matchup, starting with Arch Manning. Ohio State already got an early look at him last year in Week 1, when he completed 17 of 30 passes for 170 yards, one touchdown and one interception.
That wasn’t his cleanest outing as a starter, but he grew into the season and finished 2025 with 3,163 passing yards, 26 touchdowns and seven interceptions. Manning, the No. 1 player in the 2023 recruiting class, now arrives with the Heisman Trophy talk that comes with a quarterback of his profile.
He opened 2026 by going 20-for-27 for 305 yards, four touchdowns and an interception, a sharp reminder that he’s a very different player than the one Ohio State saw a year ago.
The Longhorns’ defense has changed, too. Texas moved on from Pete Kwiatkowski after five seasons as defensive coordinator and handed the keys to Will Muschamp, who is back in Austin after his earlier stint as Texas’ defensive coordinator from 2008-10.
Muschamp’s path has taken him through Florida, Auburn, South Carolina and Georgia, and his first game back produced results right away: three turnovers and two sacks in the opener against Texas State. That group now gets a much tougher assignment against an Ohio State offense that brings a lot more firepower.
There’s also a little extra edge attached to this one. Pickerington native Rasheem Biles, now at Texas after transferring from Pitt, added fuel to the buildup when he made clear how he feels about Ohio State.
Biles said, "I don't have a relationship with them," and later added, "They called and stuff, but I ain't want to stay in Columbus for real if I'm being honest. … When I made my list and stuff, I told my mom, I ain't really trying to be in Columbus; I ain't trying to be a Buckeye.
They ain't want me out of high school, and I was right there, there's no point in trying to get me now, you feel me?" He’s off to a strong start for Texas, too, with two total tackles, an interception and a forced fumble in Week 1.
On the outside, Texas has its own receiving tandem that can make a defense pay. Cam Coleman and Ryan Wingo both delivered in the opener.
Coleman caught three passes for 70 yards and two touchdowns, while Wingo finished with seven receptions, 120 yards and a score. Coleman arrived from Auburn this offseason after posting 93 catches, 1,306 yards and 13 touchdowns over two seasons there.
Wingo is in his third year with the Longhorns and has 83 catches, 1,306 yards and nine touchdowns across his first two seasons. Coleman flashed throughout the preseason, too, with a catch that had people buzzing before the opener.
Texas also got a welcome sign up front with left tackle Trevor Goosby. He dealt with a bone bruise on his left knee during fall camp, but he started against Texas State and didn’t miss time.
Steve Sarkisian said Goosby had to play because he didn’t get any reps in the scrimmages, and he noted the first play was designed to run right behind him. That call worked, producing a 45-yard burst by Hollywood Smothers.
Goosby is projected by multiple outlets as a top-10 pick in the 2027 NFL draft, and his matchup with Kenyatta Jackson Jr. and the rest of Ohio State’s defensive end group will be one to watch.

Urban Meyer isnt treating Ohio States trip to Texas like a heavyweight mismatch. The former Buckeyes coach called the Week 2 showdown a coin toss after both teams opened the season in impressive fashion, and he pointed to the quarterbacks as the center of it all, with Julian Sayin and Arch Manning expected to carry much of the spotlight when the game kicks off on ABC.
Austin adds another layer to a matchup that already feels like it could swing on a single mistake or a single burst of execution. Texas has been tough at home, and Meyer made clear that the environment will matter, which only raises the stakes for Ohio State as it heads into one of the biggest early-season games on the calendar with little separating the two teams.
