Ryan Day Just Got Iowa Warning Buckeye Fans Will Understand

Ohio State's Ryan Day shares his admiration for Iowa's thrilling win against Michigan, offering lessons for the Buckeyes' upcoming clash.

Ryan Day didn’t hide from Iowa’s finish against Michigan. He didn’t need to.

Asked Tuesday whether he caught the Hawkeyes’ last-second win and got to enjoy the “end of a wild game” in college football, the Ohio State coach cracked a smile and owned it.

“I did with that one,” he said.

Day wasn’t interested in dwelling on Michigan’s loss, though. With Ohio State headed to Iowa this weekend, his attention quickly shifted to what the Buckeyes can expect from Kirk Ferentz’s team at Kinnick Stadium. What jumped out most to him was how much the Hawkeyes stayed in their lane and still found a way to finish.

“I thought it was very typical of an Iowa win, where they’re very comfortable late in the game like that, punting and playing field position and getting the ball back, but you got to give them a lot of credit to go down the field in a two-minute drill. That was very impressive,” he said.

That sequence told Day plenty about the kind of team Ohio State is walking into on Saturday. He described Iowa as a group that knows exactly who it is and is riding into the matchup with momentum.

“This is a tough-minded group of players and coaches that, you got to give them a lot of credit, going on the road and winning like that,” Day said. “They’re playing well, and they’re gonna have a lot of confidence going into this game, especially coming off of that win.”

Kenyatta Jackson Jr. also weighed in on Iowa’s comeback, and his takeaway was simpler: games last 60 minutes for a reason. The Ohio State defensive end pointed to what Michigan didn’t finish, while stressing what the Buckeyes need to do in their own road test.

“Team Up North, they had the game. They did a pretty good job with the run game.

I just don’t know exactly what happened in that game,” Jackson said. “But Iowa, they came back, they fought to come back, and they won the game.

So with us on Saturday, we just got to play 60 minutes of football. Whether that’s winning, losing or tied up, we just got to play 60 minutes of football.”

Ohio State and Iowa will meet Saturday at Kinnick Stadium as the No. 5 and No. 14 teams in the AP Poll, respectively. The Buckeyes are two-touchdown favorites, and the over/under is set at 45.5 points.

Ohio State Heads To Iowa With Two Starters Suddenly In Doubt

Ohio State heads to Iowa with a little more uncertainty than it likely wanted this week, as two starters showed up on the availability report as questionable. Jay Timmons is working back from a hamstring injury, while Phillip Daniels remains sidelined after an earlier injury, leaving the Buckeyes with some real late-week questions as they prepare for a tough road test.

There is at least one encouraging note for the defense, though, with defensive end Zion Grady cleared to return after missing two games. Iowa, meanwhile, will be short a starter of its own, with safety Tyler Brown ruled out as he continues to recover, so both teams are heading into the matchup with some moving parts still unresolved. Jeremiah Smith Just Forced An Ohio State Greatness Debate

Jeremiah Smiths record-setting afternoon against Illinois gave Ohio State something bigger than a win to talk about. The freshman hauled in 12 catches for 217 yards and four touchdowns, a line that immediately pushed his name into a conversation that Buckeye fans know is never casual: where he already stacks up among the great wideouts to wear the scarlet and gray.

Jeremiah Smiths physical tools and production have drawn praise from analysts and former players alike, and the early rsum is starting to look the part of a legacy candidate. The debate now carries into the next stretch of the schedule, where more big games will help determine whether this was a dazzling milestone or the start of a case for the top spot in Ohio State receiver history. Ohio State Faces One Big Roster Question Entering Dieblers Third Season

Ohio States annual media day offered the first real look at Jake Diebler entering his third season, and the Buckeyes came away sounding encouraged about what this roster can become. With six returning players and nine newcomers, the mix is still coming together, but Diebler pointed to the teams size, depth and a non-conference schedule that should give the group an early measuring stick after a week of practice.

What remains unsettled is how quickly all of those pieces will fit, especially with exhibition games on the horizon and the regular season set to start Nov. 2. The Buckeyes have plenty of new faces to sort through and enough talent to make the early weeks interesting, but the next stretch will reveal whether the rosters promise can translate into something more defined once the games begin to matter.
