Ohio State is getting an early jump on one of the biggest quarterback names in the 2028 cycle, and Ryan Day is right in the middle of the race for New Jersey standout Lukas Prock.
Prock, a four-star quarterback, has trimmed his list to five schools, according to Rivals’ Hayes Fawcett last week. The Buckeyes are among the programs still standing, and they’re fighting off Michigan and Notre Dame for the East Coast prospect.
The buzz around Prock is easy to understand. Per 247Sports’ Composite, he’s currently the No. 3 player in New Jersey and the No. 6 quarterback in the 2028 recruiting class.
He backed up that ranking with a huge sophomore season at Hun High School, throwing for 4,330 yards, 41 touchdowns and seven interceptions. He also added 154 rushing yards and a touchdown on the ground.
Ohio State’s push comes as Day and his staff continue to stay busy on the recruiting trail. The Buckeyes are already viewed as a consensus top-10 team in the 2027 cycle, but the real attention is starting to shift toward 2028, where Ohio State is making noise again in July.
That class is already loaded. The Buckeyes have two five-stars in wide receiver Jett Harrison and EDGE Jameer Whyce, plus four-star running back Elijah Newman-Hall.
Ohio State currently sits at No. 2 in the 2028 team rankings, and landing Prock could be the move that sends the Buckeyes to No. 1.
For now, though, the battle is still on. Ohio State, Michigan and Notre Dame are all in the hunt, and none of the five schools on Prock’s list has a quarterback committed yet.

Ryan Day Has 3 Ohio State Transfer Misses Fans Still Feel
Ohio States offseason turnover was already heavy enough to reshape the roster, but the Buckeyes also watched a few departures turn into reminders of what might have been. Among the roughly 30 players who moved on, several names stood out because they left with paths that suggested they could have filled real roles in Columbus, whether as a dependable target at tight end, a quarterback with major pedigree, or another body in a defensive line rotation that always needs it.
Joe Royer, Quinn Ewers and Hero Kanu all found new homes after leaving the program, and their exits still linger because each one touched a different need for Ohio State. Royers development elsewhere, Ewers brief stop in Columbus before heading back to Texas, and Kanus departure from the defensive front all fed the same question Buckeyes fans keep circling back to: how different might this roster have looked if those pieces had stayed put? Ohio State May Be Watching A Pivotal 2027 WR Battle Slip Away
A major 2027 wide receiver race is narrowing, and Monshun Sales has become the name to watch for programs trying to land one of the class elite pass catchers. The Lawrence North standout has drawn heavy attention from Texas and Indiana, with the Hoosiers making a point of leaning on former player Omar Cooper Jr. as part of their push for the in-state star.
For Ohio State, the bigger concern may be less about where Sales lands and more about what his choice could mean across the board. Texas remains active in the chase and could end up shaping the recruitment of another top 2027 receiver, Easton Royal, while the Buckeyes appear to be weighing other options in the class as the board continues to move around them. Ohio State Commit Jamier Brown Just Got A Recruiting Snub Fans Will Hate
Ohio States 2027 recruiting class is already shaping up with elite talent, including five-stars Marcus Fakatou, D.J. Jacobs and Jamier Brown, and the Buckeyes are still pushing to add more high-end pieces before the cycle really takes off. Brown has been one of the headliners in that group, a receiver commitment who has helped give the class early star power while other national services continue to view him as one of the best prospects in the country.
Rivals, though, has taken a different view for now, and that kind of shift always gets attention when it happens to a Buckeye commit. The broader picture still looks strong for Ohio State, with the staff staying in the hunt for more five-star targets such as David Gabriel Georges and Monshun Sales, and more commitments are expected by December as the class continues to come together.
