Ryan Day Fuels A Bigger Ohio State Officiating Debate

Ryan Day is raising concerns about officiating standards after a series of critical missed calls in Ohio State's recent clash against Indiana.

Ohio State’s frustration with officiating boiled over again Saturday, and Ryan Day made it clear he’s had enough.

Against Indiana, the Buckeyes saw multiple pass interference calls go uncalled on the Hoosiers, including several plays in which Jeremiah Smith was hit before the ball got near him. Ohio State also believed it was on the wrong end of a couple of missed holding calls, and the roughing the passer penalty on Jaylen McClain drew plenty of ire as well.

Day was animated in multiple exchanges with officials during the game, but the complaints went nowhere. On Tuesday, he was asked directly about the officiating and didn’t hide how aggravating the repeated mistakes have been.

"We turned in several plays in that game. Quite honestly, there was accountability taken.

But sometimes you feel like it's a day late and a dollar short. I think these guys are trying.

They. mean well. But we know these are big decisions that change people's lives, and so we're going to keep communicating with them...

To say that it's not sometimes frustrating would not be true."

He pointed to one of the missed calls involving Smith as the kind of play that sticks with you once you see it back.

"When you see a photograph, it takes you back, because you see what you see. There's nothing we can do about anything in the past.

I'm not trying to sit here and bash anybody. But you guys saw it.

You see the pictures, you see the film. You know what's there.

Hope isn't a strategy, but I'm hoping it gets better."

Smith has become the clearest flashpoint in the discussion. He hasn’t drawn a pass interference since his freshman season in 2024, even though there have been several plays where defenders have clearly gotten there early. Ohio State’s staff believes those missed calls have been obvious enough to notice without much debate.

That’s why Day has been willing to keep bringing it up. The Buckeyes feel like they’ve been living with too many missed penalties, and too many of them have gone against the wrong side of the whistle. The source of the frustration isn’t subtle, and Day wants it addressed.

With a new quarterback in place, Ohio State is going to need every edge it can get. The Buckeyes can’t afford to keep swallowing missed calls, especially when the margin matters so much. Day’s message was blunt: the officiating has to improve, because what happened against Indiana can’t keep happening.

Urban Meyer Just Turned Up Pressure On Ohio State's QB Decision

The Buckeyes quarterback picture got even more interesting after Julian Sayins injury, and now an old familiar voice has jumped into the conversation. Urban Meyer, the former Ohio State coach, said Tavien St. Clair should be the next quarterback to get a look, a comment that adds another layer to a decision Ryan Day and his staff are already working through as they try to steady the position.

With the bye week providing a little breathing room, Ohio State is set to use the extra time to let St. Clair and Fahey compete and see who gives the offense the best chance moving forward. It is the sort of evaluation that can shape the rest of the season, and Meyers take only underscores how closely the Buckeyes quarterback situation is being watched right now. [Read more 🡒]

Ohio State Suddenly Faces A Backfield Question Fans Wont Ignore

JaKobi Jacksons foot injury has turned into a real early-season concern for Ohio State, with the running back having undergone surgery for a Lisfranc issue and now expected to miss several games. The Buckeyes had hoped to get him back in time for the stretch run, and the latest sense around the program is that a return against Michigan remains the target, with the postseason also in view.

Arthur Smith said the timeline is still uncertain, which leaves Ohio State managing the backfield without a clear date for Jacksons return. For a team that knows how much late-season stability matters, especially in rivalry week and beyond, this is the kind of situation that can reshape how the offense handles the weeks ahead. Ohio States Backfield Just Got More Important Than Ever

JaKobi Jacksons absence is becoming a bigger storyline for Ohio State by the day. The running back underwent surgery for a Lisfranc foot injury and is expected to miss several games after getting hurt against Maryland, which also kept him out against Indiana. The Buckeyes had already been navigating the usual churn of a long season, but losing a back with hopes of returning before the end of the year changes the calculation in a hurry.

Julian Sayins injury only adds to the pressure on the offense, with the quarterback situation still indefinite and the backfield carrying more of the load. For Ohio State, that means the ground game is no longer just a complement to the passing attack, it is central to how the Buckeyes get through the next stretch. The staff will be watching closely to see who can absorb the snaps and steady the offense until Jackson has a chance to come back. [Read more 🡒]
