The Penn State wrestling team entered this year's NCAA Division tournament with a target on their back, aiming for their fifth consecutive national title. Judging by their first-round performance on March 19, they’re well on track to achieve that goal.
Under the expert guidance of Coach Cael Sanderson, the Nittany Lions went a perfect 10-0 in the opening round. Impressively, six of their wrestlers secured bonus points through major decisions or technical falls, showcasing their dominance on the mat.
With 22.5 points after the first round, Penn State has carved out a significant lead over their closest competitors. Iowa trails with 15 points, while Ohio State and Oklahoma State are tied for third with 14.5 points each. The Nittany Lions’ ability to rack up 12.5 bonus points nearly matches the total scores of many top 10 teams, underscoring their prowess.
Key performances came from Luke Lilledahl (125), Marcus Blaze (133), Shayne Van Ness (149), Mitchell Mesenbrink (165), Rocco Welsh (184), and Josh Barr (197), all of whom won their matches with bonus points. Entering the tournament with seven top-seeded wrestlers, Penn State’s lineup delivered with authority.
Meanwhile, Ohio State had a strong showing, going 9-1 in the first round. Their sole loss came at 197, where Luke Geog fell to West Virginia’s Rune Lawrence in a 9-6 decision. Geog still has a chance to fight back and potentially finish as high as third.
Ohio State secured four wins with bonus points. Ben Davino at 133 dominated with a 17-2 tech fall, while Jesse Mendez at 141, Ethan Stiles at 149, and Paddy Gallagher at 165 all claimed victories by major decision.
Penn State’s impressive streak includes four national titles in a row and 11 since 2011, a testament to their sustained excellence. As Day 2 kicks off at noon at Rocket Arena, all eyes will be on the semifinals, set for a 7 p.m. start, to see if the Nittany Lions can continue their march toward another championship.
