Ohio State University is facing a significant leadership change as President Ted Carter has stepped down. Carter, who served as the university’s 17th president, submitted his resignation over the weekend, and it was accepted by the university on Sunday.
Carter's tenure began during a challenging period for Ohio State, as the institution was embroiled in a legal battle involving allegations against former campus doctor Richard Strauss. Hundreds of former students accused the university of failing to protect them from Strauss, who was accused of sexual misconduct.
The university's board of trustees revealed that Carter had disclosed an inappropriate relationship. The individual involved sought public resources to support her personal business, leading to Carter offering his resignation.
In a statement released after his departure was announced, Carter expressed his regret: “For personal reasons, I have made the difficult decision to resign from my role as president of The Ohio State University. I disclosed to the board of trustees that I made a mistake in allowing inappropriate access to Ohio State leadership.”
Carter, who was appointed on August 22, 2023, reflected on his time at Ohio State, noting the progress made under his leadership. He praised the university community, stating, “The students, faculty, and staff at this university are among the very best in the world, and the Education for Citizenship 2035 strategic plan has Ohio State poised to succeed for years to come.”
This development places Ohio State in the position of searching for a new president. Carter's resignation adds him to a list of high-profile figures in the academic world facing similar controversies, including Sherrone Moore.
As Ohio State embarks on the search for new leadership, the focus remains on maintaining the momentum of its strategic initiatives and continuing to uphold its educational standards.
