Ohio States Recruiting Pipeline Looks Even Stronger Than Fans Realize

Ohio State's future football talent shines as they gear up for a strong postseason push with standout performances from top recruits.

The high school football calendar in Ohio has already turned the corner into Week 10, and that means it’s time to check back in on Ohio State’s verbal commitments as the season rolls along.

Ryan Day’s staff has built out a loaded 2027 class, and it grew again this week with the addition of Cleveland St. Ignatius linebacker James Conrad.

The Buckeyes now have 20 commitments in that group, which is the current senior class. Six of those pledges sit in the national top 100, and the class is led by Georgia defensive end DJ Jacobs, the nation’s No. 1 overall prospect, according to 247Sports.com.

Ohio State’s 2027 class is ranked seventh nationally in the 247Sports class rankings.

The 2027 class breaks down like this by position: one quarterback, no running backs, two wide receivers, six offensive linemen, five defensive linemen, two linebackers and four defensive backs.

The geographic footprint is just as wide. Ohio State’s 2027 commitments come from six players in Ohio, four in Florida, two in California and one apiece from Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Texas and Virginia.

The Buckeyes’ 2028 class is already taking shape, too. Ohio State has five commitments in that group, and four of them are ranked in the national top 100. Massachusetts quarterback Christopher Vargas sits at the top of the class as the nation’s No. 4 overall prospect and No. 2 quarterback, and Ohio State’s 2028 haul currently holds an early No. 2 ranking in the team standings.

For 2029, the Buckeyes have one commitment so far: California wide receiver Austin Miller. 247Sports.com has him as the nation’s No. 50 overall prospect and No. 9 wide receiver in that class.

Below, we will list the commits for each of these classes with some vital stats and when these players will play next.

Ohio State Just Entered A Quarterback Debate Nobody Wanted

Ohio State was already navigating the usual late-season pressure when Julian Sayin went down against Indiana, and now the Buckeyes have an unexpected quarterback conversation on their hands. The injury to the starting quarterback adds a jolt of uncertainty at a position Ohio State had hoped to keep settled, with coach Ryan Day needing to sort through a depth chart that suddenly looks a lot thinner than it did a week ago.

Luke Fahey stepped in after Sayin exited the game, but his performance left enough questions to keep the job open. Tavien St. Clair is waiting in the wings as one of the most highly regarded young quarterbacks on the roster, and the Buckeyes may now have to lean on a pair of freshmen sooner than anyone expected while Sayin works his way back. Indianas Playoff Picture Just Got More Complicated After AP Chaos

A wild upset weekend around college football has turned the playoff race into a moving target, and Ohio State is right in the middle of the ripple effects. Several top-ranked teams fell, including No. 1 Georgia and No. 2 Notre Dame, creating a fresh scramble near the top of the AP rankings even though USC was idle and did not have to spend the weekend on the field.

The Trojans still picked up a little from the chaos, climbing to No. 17 in the AP Top 25, but the bigger question is whether they can turn that position into a real playoff push. Oddsmakers still view USC as a long shot at +425 to make the College Football Playoff, and the road ahead runs straight through opponents like Ohio State and Indiana, the kind of games that could either validate the buzz or leave the picture just as murky. Alabama Suddenly Has A Troubling EJ Crowell Question

In a sport where the injury report can reshape a season in a hurry, Alabama is suddenly dealing with a question around running back EJ Crowell after he sustained a lower leg injury. The timetable is unclear, which is never a comfortable place for a team that is trying to keep its backfield steady and maintain momentum as the calendar turns deeper into the season.

For Ohio State, any injury ripple across the national picture is worth watching, especially with Julian Sayin already expected to miss several weeks with a right arm injury. The Buckeyes are navigating their own quarterback uncertainty, and when another top program is left waiting on clarity at a key offensive spot, it adds another layer to the broader race among contenders trying to stay intact long enough to make a push.
