One of the biggest camp stories has been Timmons, the true freshman who now looks set to start at nickel in Week 1. His strong work throughout camp pushed him into the spot, and now the question becomes how he handles it when the lights come on.
Nickel is one of the most demanding and flexible jobs on the defense, and defensive coordinator Matt Patricia will get an early look at how Timmons deals with that responsibility. But the first thing to monitor against Ball State may not be his production so much as his usage. Day said as many as six receivers could rotate this season, so the key question is who gets the first crack with the opening group and how the snaps are divided.
Henry Jr. could still be easing into that role, but his early workload will tell a lot.
Then there’s Sanchez, who appears poised for the biggest leap of anyone on the roster. His offseason progress has been a major camp storyline, and he should be in line for a much larger role than the rotational work he had last season.
With his size and skill set, he has the look of a cornerback who could rise to the top of the room. That possibility could get an early test if Ball State leans on the pass.
Donovan Hamilton and Jabari Smith Jr. are expected to be two of the Cardinals’ best offensive players, and with the game likely playing from behind, the ball may have to go in the air. That could create the kind of turnover chance Sanchez is hoping for as he tries to launch a big sophomore season.
