Matt Patricia is officially staying at Ohio State, and Buckeyes fans have plenty of reasons to celebrate. Despite interest from multiple NFL teams, Patricia has agreed to a new contract, solidifying his commitment to Ohio State. Athletic director Ross Bjork confirmed the news, emphasizing Patricia’s dedication to the program and his family’s happiness in Columbus.
Rumors had swirled about NFL teams eyeing Patricia after his stellar debut season with the Buckeyes, where he orchestrated the nation’s top defense. Yet, Bjork was clear: Patricia was always committed to Ohio State. “His family loves it here, and his kids have fit in well,” Bjork noted, highlighting the continuous dialogue that led to the new agreement.
Patricia's initial contract was a three-year deal worth $2.5 million annually. While the specifics of his new contract haven’t been disclosed, it’s expected he’ll earn at least $3 million, placing him among the highest-paid defensive coordinators in college football.
In his first year, Patricia’s defense was a force to be reckoned with, leading the nation in scoring and total defense. The Buckeyes held opponents to just 9.3 points and 219.1 yards per game, numbers reminiscent of Alabama’s legendary 2011 defense. Although Patricia was a finalist for the Broyles Award, which honors the nation’s top assistant coach, it ultimately went to Indiana’s Bryant Haines.
During the Broyles Award ceremony, Patricia shared his enthusiasm for Ohio State, calling it a “special place.” After a lengthy NFL career, including time with the New England Patriots and as head coach of the Detroit Lions, Patricia expressed joy in returning to the collegiate level. “I wanted to get back to teaching and mentoring,” he said, reflecting on the invigorating energy of working with college athletes.
Patricia’s first season saw him replace eight starters, all drafted into the NFL, yet he still led the Buckeyes to defensive dominance. Now, he faces the challenge of rebuilding once more, with seven starters from last season moving on, including key players like Caden Curry and Caleb Downs.
With Patricia’s return, Ohio State boasts two former NFL head coaches in its coordinator roles. Ryan Day’s recent hire of Arthur Smith as offensive coordinator adds another layer of NFL experience to the Buckeyes' coaching staff, setting the stage for an exciting 2026 season.
