Ohio State’s playoff position barely moved after a week that shook up the Big Ten around it. The Buckeyes handled Illinois, but Oregon’s win over USC and Iowa’s victory over Michigan made the race feel a little tighter, a little messier, and a lot more interesting as October arrives.
That’s the backdrop for a weekend packed with games that could start sorting contenders from pretenders.
The biggest pressure points are in the SEC, where Alabama hosts Mississippi State and Georgia gets Vanderbilt. Mississippi State has been one of the stories of the season thanks to Kamario Taylor, and after beating ranked Missouri last week, the Bulldogs are in the top 20 for the first time since 2022.
For a program that has won just 12 total games over the last three seasons, this is a real chance to make things uncomfortable for the Crimson Tide at home and turn playoff talk in Starkville from fantasy to something more serious. Mississippi State will be favored in four of its final seven games, and if it can steal a road win at one of LSU, Texas, or Ole Miss, the Bulldogs will be in the CFP for the first time.
Alabama, though, has its own bigger picture to manage. The Tide have Georgia and Tennessee coming up in the next two weeks, so the trap is obvious: look past Mississippi State and pay for it. If Alabama can win two of its next three, it should be sitting in a strong playoff position heading into November, with a trip to Baton Rouge still waiting down the line.
Georgia, meanwhile, keeps rolling into a softer test. The Bulldogs have looked like the 2021-23 version of themselves through four games, and with Oklahoma underachieving, they haven’t really been pushed yet.
Vanderbilt doesn’t appear likely to change that. The wrinkle here is Jared Curtis, who decommitted from Georgia at the last second, adding a little extra juice to a matchup that otherwise sets up Georgia’s real season to begin next weekend in Tuscaloosa.
Ohio State has its own major checkpoint at home against Iowa, and this one carries real playoff weight for both teams. Iowa is coming off its walk-off win in Ann Arbor and now gets a shot at Ohio State, with a rare piece of history in reach. Since 2012, only two teams have beaten both Ohio State and Michigan in the same season, and the Hawkeyes can put themselves squarely into the playoff conversation with another statement win.
Their path from here is manageable enough to matter. Ohio State is the last ranked team left on Iowa’s schedule, and if the Hawkeyes win this game, they can survive one loss in the stretch of tough road trips at Washington, Minnesota, or Northwestern. If they lose, they can still make the playoff by winning out, and they’d be favored in every game remaining.
Ohio State can’t afford to treat this as anything less than a major test. There’s been some talk that the Buckeyes could become the first 9-3 team to reach the College Football Playoff because of their schedule strength, but that’s not the kind of path they want to invite. A loss here would mean Ohio State has dropped both of its first two tough games and would need to beat Indiana, USC, Oregon, and Michigan just to get back into the top 12.
Elsewhere, Florida looks like it may be turning a corner after blowing out Ole Miss last Saturday. The Gators still have the top two teams in the country left on the schedule, but outside of that they should be favored the rest of the way.
A road trip to Columbia is next, and they appear positioned to handle it. Missouri, on the other hand, remains the kind of team that sits in the lower half of the top 25 without ever really proving much.
The Tigers have become a measuring stick in the SEC: the good teams don’t lose to them, and the bad teams don’t beat them. Florida looks like a good team, so the pick here is simple.
BYU also stays in the spotlight as it tries to remain unbeaten with its first Big 12 road game, a trip to Fort Worth to face TCU. If the Cougars want any shot at an at-large berth, they have to keep taking care of the conference games where they’re favored.
Miami gets a trip to Clemson, but the ACC has lost some of the shine this matchup would have carried a few years ago. A late-2010s Clemson team hosting this Miami squad on a Saturday night would have been one of the games of the year. Instead, Miami goes in as a big favorite, and the main question is whether Clemson can even make it competitive.
USC, coming off its loss to Oregon, gets Washington at home and badly needs something positive in front of its crowd. The Trojans may have the right opponent for a rebound, because Washington has been one of the most disappointing teams in the country so far.
The Huskies paid Demond Williams a lot of money to keep him from transferring to LSU, and they still haven’t scored 25 points against an FBS opponent. Last week’s home loss to Minnesota only made things worse.
USC now has a chance to build some momentum before heading to Penn State for the whiteout next Saturday night.
Boise State also keeps building its own case after becoming the first non-power conference team in the AP poll this season. The Broncos blew out Western Michigan in Kalamazoo and now host Utah State on the blue field in what is being billed as each team’s first-ever Pac-12 game.
And Indiana gets what should be a tune-up before the schedule tightens again. Rutgers has the potential to be the worst power-conference team in college football, and this can be a get-right game for the Hoosiers. Their season really ramps up after this, with a Big Ten Championship Game rematch against Ohio State sandwiched between road trips to Nebraska and Michigan.

Ohio State Suddenly Has A Lineup Decision That Could Spark Debate
Ryan Day still has one key offensive line question to sort out as Ohio State works through the week, and it centers on injured right tackle Phillip Daniels. Day did not offer an update on Daniels, but he made it clear the Buckeyes will wait to see how Daniels progresses before settling on the starting lineup, a process that could shape how the line looks heading into the next stretch.
In Daniels absence, Gabe VanSickle has held up well at right guard and helped the front continue to play at a high level. That leaves Ohio State with a familiar kind of dilemma: if Daniels is close to returning, the staff has to balance the value of getting a veteran back in the mix against the way the current group has been performing, and that decision is still very much open. Iowa Has A Real Shot To Shake Up The Big Ten Again
Iowa arrives in Columbus with a little more belief than most visiting teams carry into a top-five matchup. The No. 14 Hawkeyes just jolted the Big Ten race with an upset of Michigan, and now they get another chance to test themselves against No. 5 Ohio State. Hank Brown has given Iowa a steady hand at quarterback, showing enough poise under pressure to make the Hawkeyes a real threat if the game tightens up late.
For Ohio State, the timing makes this one feel bigger than a routine conference showdown. Ryan Day has already acknowledged the challenge, and the Buckeyes know how much a win would matter for momentum as the season moves deeper into the stretch. The bigger question is whether Ohio States defense can settle in quickly enough to keep Iowa from turning this into another statement night for a program that has already shaken up the league once. Jeremiah Smith Is Giving Ohio State Fans Even Bigger Expectations
The first month of the 2026 college football season has already made Jeremiah Smith impossible to ignore, and Ohio State fans have every reason to keep watching closely. In a year filled with standout wide receiver production across the sport, Smith has continued to separate himself with the kind of weekly impact that turns a promising talent into the name everyone else is chasing.
His latest eruption only sharpened that feeling, even before the stat sheet fully settled in. Smith put together a performance that pushed his season ceiling in a major way and had the Buckeyes thinking bigger about what his role can become as the schedule grows tougher, with his recent production now setting a bar that will be hard to miss for the rest of the fall.
