Ohio States 2023 Class Is Starting To Look Like A Major Win

Ohio State's 2023 recruiting class is poised to make a significant impact this season, countering a high departure rate with promising talent and strategic opportunities.

Ohio State’s 2023 recruiting class is no longer just a list of signees. It’s becoming a real part of the program’s story this season.

The headline number isn’t perfect, but it’s a lot better than it first looks. Ohio State signed 21 players in that class, and 11 have moved on.

That leaves 10 who are either starting or contributing, which works out to roughly 48% production. Add in three players now in the NFL, and the class starts to look a whole lot more substantial.

There were also two departures that need to be folded into the count. Offensive lineman Miles Walker left for Boise State and has since retired from college football.

Defensive back Jayden Bonsu departed for Pitt, switched to linebacker, and is hoping for his first game action with the Panthers in 2026. That pushes the total number of departures to 11, not 9.

At first glance, 11 exits out of 21 signees sounds rough. But, as former ESPN commentator Lee Corso was fond of saying on telecasts, "Not so fast, my friend.".

Ohio State’s class has more positive outcomes than that raw departure number suggests. Beyond the 10 starters and contributors, there are five more players who belong on the success side of the ledger. That brings the total to 15 of 26 when those players are included, a 58% hit rate.

The list also includes some notable pro outcomes: a 2026 5th round draft choice by the New Orleans Saints, a 2025 1st round draft choice by the Kansas City Chiefs, and an undrafted free agent who signed with the Carolina Panthers in 2026.

There’s even a possibility that some of the players who have already moved on could come back into the mix because of the recent "5 for 5" rule, which could give them another year in Columbus. The most likely candidates to take advantage of that would appear to be Will Smith, Jr. and Jason Moore, since neither has become a starter for Ohio State yet.

With Ohio State heading toward a 2026 schedule that Ryan Day has called a "monster", the remaining players from the 2023 class still have a chance to add more to what has already been an important group for the Buckeyes. Ryan Day, his staff, and Ohio State general manager Mark Pantoni have already gotten strong value from the class. Now there’s room for even more.

Khary Wilder Is Giving Ohio State Fans An Early Reason To Believe

Khary Wilder has already made himself part of the conversation in Ohio States fall camp. The freshman defensive lineman shed his black stripe, becoming the fifth Buckeyes newcomer to do so this year, a small but meaningful marker that he is settling in quickly and starting to earn trust on a line that will need fresh pieces to emerge.

His timing matters because Ohio State is trying to reload up front after losing several key players to the NFL Draft, and defensive coordinator Matt Patricia is known for favoring a deep rotation. Wilder is expected to be in that mix, giving the Buckeyes another young option to lean on as they try to keep the defense operating at a high level even as the roster turns over. [Read more 🡒]

Ohio States Backup Quarterback Battle Just Got More Complicated

The second full week of training camp has already started to clarify a key part of Ohio States quarterback picture behind Julian Sayin, and freshman Luke Fahey has pushed himself right into the conversation. Head coach Ryan Day said Fahey has been competing strongly for the backup role, a notable development for a player who arrived as a three-star recruit with a reputation for pocket passing and steady work ethic.

Fahey also earned his black stripe on Saturday, another sign that his progression is being taken seriously inside the program. His rise has made the battle for the No. 2 job more complicated, with Tavien St. Clair now feeling added pressure as camp moves forward and the Buckeyes continue sorting out the depth chart behind their starter. Ryan Day Just Turned Up The Pressure On Ohio State's Bo Jackson

Ryan Day has made it clear that Bo Jacksons progress in fall camp is being judged with a sharp eye, and for now the Ohio State running back is being pushed to prove that his improved running style will matter when the games begin. Day said Jackson looks better than he did a year ago, but the early message from camp has been about earning trust through practice, not reputation, and that has put Jackson in a more competitive spot than some might have expected.

Jacksons path is still very much in front of him, but the way Ohio State has handled the running back rotation suggests nothing is guaranteed. Day has stressed that development has to show up on the field, and the longer that evaluation goes on, the more this becomes about Jacksons ability to keep moving forward in Columbus and forcing the staff to keep him in the picture.
