As the 2026 college football season approaches, Ohio State is gearing up with one of the most talent-rich rosters in the nation. Despite the departure of key players, the Buckeyes remain a formidable force, poised to compete for another national championship.
A key player to watch is sophomore defensive end Zion Grady, who has earned the No. 20 spot on a fan-ranked list of top Buckeye players heading into the new season.
Zion Grady's Journey So Far
Grady emerged from Enterprise, Alabama, as a highly sought-after four-star prospect and ranked among the top 15 edge rushers in the 2025 recruiting class. Initially committing to Alabama, Grady changed course and joined Ohio State in June 2024, despite interest from several other top programs.
His freshman season started slowly, with limited snaps in the early games. However, Grady made the most of his opportunities in non-conference matchups, recording three tackles and a tackle for loss against Grambling State and Ohio. He consistently contributed throughout the season, notching a career-high three tackles against UCLA and one in the College Football Playoff quarterfinal against Miami.
Grady wrapped up his first year with 13 tackles, two tackles for loss, and one sack, ultimately advancing past veteran Beau Atkison on the depth chart.
Looking Ahead to 2026
With Caden Curry heading to the NFL, a spot has opened up on the defensive line. Grady is in the mix to fill this position, competing against players like Atkinson, fellow sophomore Epi Sitanilei, newcomer Khary Wilder, and Alabama transfer Qua Russaw.
Grady's freshman flashes have put him in strong contention for a starting role. His ability to pressure the quarterback will be crucial, especially if opponents focus on returning starter Kenyatta Jackson Jr. Grady recorded four pressures in limited action last season, showcasing his potential.
The competition is fierce, but Grady's early experience gives him an edge. While Atkinson brings experience, Grady's ceiling is higher as he enters his second year. Russaw's versatility is still being assessed, and both Sitanilei and Wilder lack Grady's game-time experience.
Assuming Grady sees more action, his production is expected to rise significantly. With the talent to disrupt offenses and a promising supporting cast on the defensive line, Grady is poised to become a key contributor for Ohio State in 2026. Keep an eye on this rising star as he looks to make a significant impact on the field.
