Ohio State's football program is undergoing a transformation with 51 new players, including 43 on scholarship, and a fresh coaching lineup. This spring, the Buckeyes are busy with introductory press conferences, and one standout addition is senior defensive tackle James Smith, who transferred from Alabama.
Smith, a 6-foot-2, 314-pound powerhouse from Montgomery, Alabama, has already made waves in practice and is poised to be a key player for Ohio State in 2026. His impressive high school career at Carver High School earned him recognition as the nation's No. 28 overall prospect and No. 2 interior defensive lineman in the 2023 class, according to 247Sports Composite.
Initially committed to Alabama, Smith chose the Crimson Tide over several top programs, including Ohio State. During his time at Alabama, he transitioned from a defensive end in Nick Saban’s 3-4 defense to a three-technique role under new coach Kalen DeBoer’s 3-3-5 scheme. Over three seasons, Smith played in 37 games, starting 12 in 2025, and tallied 50 tackles, 10 tackles for loss, and 3.5 sacks.
In his new home at Ohio State, Smith is embracing the opportunity to learn and grow. "I feel great," he shared after a recent practice. "It's all about being open to new things and learning."
Smith describes his playing style as "violent," focusing on disrupting plays and executing his role for the team. He emphasizes the importance of maintaining aggression and persistence on the field, saying, "If you're three yards in the backfield, just keep running at him. You're going to eventually find the ball."
Smith has quickly formed a strong bond with Ohio State’s defensive coordinator, Matt Patricia. Their mutual respect is evident, with Smith praising Patricia’s comprehensive understanding of the game. "He knows what every position is supposed to look like," Smith noted, highlighting Patricia’s ability to provide valuable insights alongside defensive line coach Larry Johnson.
Landing Smith through the transfer portal is shaping up to be a significant win for the Buckeyes. His presence on the defensive line is expected to make a considerable impact, and fans are eager to see how his talents will elevate Ohio State’s defense in the coming season.
