Ohio State escaped a pair of breakdowns in the secondary against Texas, but the film still left a clear warning light flashing.
Two pass plays in particular stood out. On one, Texas receiver Cam Coleman slipped behind the defense on a deep ball, and Ohio State got a break when Arch Manning’s throw was off, glanced off Coleman, and landed in safety Jaylen McClain’s hands for an interception. On another, Ryan Wingo was wide open down the seam and looked ready to score, but Manning delivered a perfect pass that bounced off Wingo’s hands and fell incomplete.
Those missed chances should have been touchdowns for Texas, and they also showed Ohio State there is work to do if it wants to eliminate coverage busts in future matchup games.
“Everybody had to go back to the drawing board and hone in on their 1/11th,” OSU safety Earl Litte Jr. said about those blown coverages. “Then, like I said, everybody has to be mindful of their own job and do their own job in those critical moments when they show up.”
Little added that whether the Buckeyes win or lose, the coaching staff keeps the pressure on every day in practice.
“Practice here every day is like going to war,” Moore said. “It's going to be critical every single day.
The coaches coach like that every single day. And they're gonna get everything up out of you.
They're gonna squeeze everything out of you. So when those moments do show up, we'll be ready.”
With Big Ten play coming up soon, Ohio State’s hope is that the unit is firing on all cylinders before the real grind begins.
