Ohio State's Latest Recruiting Push Centers On Two Elite Visitors

Ohio State is making strategic moves during their bye week to secure top-tier talent for future seasons, eyeing promising prospects like Kuika Moaalii and RMonie Edwards while leveraging upcoming home games for impactful recruiting efforts.

Ohio State’s bye week turned into a recruiting sprint, with the Buckeyes adding fresh momentum on both the 2029 and 2028 fronts.

The latest offer went out Wednesday to Kuika Moaalii, a 2029 wide receiver from St. John Bosco.

Moaalii, who shared the news on his social media, is listed at 6-foot-3 and 205 pounds. He’s still unranked on his 247Sports profile for now, but his offer sheet already tells a bigger story about how he’s viewed around the country.

Alabama, Miami, Oregon, USC, Washington and several other programs are in the mix for the sophomore, who is already leading his St. John Bosco team at receiver. With double-digit schools involved, Moaalii is shaping up to be one of the more heavily pursued receivers in his class.

Ohio State receiver coach Cortez Hankton clearly likes what he sees, and the next step is getting Moaalii on campus. That’s often how the Buckeyes keep moving in receiver recruiting, and their track record at the position gives them real leverage.

The Buckeyes also remained in the running for another high-end target, this time in the 2028 class. Offensive lineman R’Monie Edwards kept Ohio State on a trimmed-down list of 15 schools after starting with nearly 40 offers.

Edwards is a 6-foot-5, 310-pound prospect from Cypress, Texas, and the 247Sports Composite has him ranked No. 107 nationally and as the No. 8 offensive lineman in the country. Along with Ohio State, his list includes Oklahoma, LSU, Texas, Florida, Texas Tech, Nebraska, UCLA, Auburn, Missouri, Oregon, USC, Kentucky, Arizona State and SMU.

Tyler Bowen is working to keep the Buckeyes in position, but the competition is crowded and the race figures to stay tight as Edwards moves toward a decision. Getting him on campus sooner rather than later would help Ohio State stay in the conversation.

And the recruiting push isn’t slowing down after the bye week. Ohio State heads to USC this weekend, but the home schedule ahead gives the staff more chances to host blue-chip talent.

The Oregon game is expected to be one of the biggest upcoming recruiting weekends, and linebacker Tahj Gray is a major name to watch. Gray, a New Jersey native, is ranked No. 17 nationally and as the top linebacker in the 2028 class by the 247Sports Composite.

He already has offers from every major school in the country, and Ohio State remains high on his list. His comments about Matt Patricia only add to the sense that the Buckeyes are sitting well in this recruitment, with his visit coming soon and James Laurinaitis and company set to stay heavily involved.

Ohio State Heads Into USC With Key Availability Still Unsettled

Ohio States first injury report ahead of USC offered a clearer picture of the Buckeyes health, and it was not a particularly comforting one. Quarterback Julian Sayin was listed as out indefinitely, while safety Leroy Roker and running back Ja'Kobi Jackson were also ruled out, leaving Ryan Day and his staff with some important holes to account for as the matchup approaches.

There were a few brighter notes in the report, with players such as Jay Timmons and Brandon Inniss showing up as questionable rather than unavailable. Day also addressed availability and practice status, but with several key names still uncertain, Ohio State is heading into a major Big Ten test with more decisions left to settle than it would prefer. Ohio State's USC Trip Now Rides On Ryan Day's Toughest Call

Ryan Day is staring at one of his toughest personnel calls of the season heading into Ohio States trip to USC, with Julian Sayin sidelined by injury and the Buckeyes needing to choose between two very different options at quarterback. Freshman Luke Fahey has flashed promise with quick reads and mobility, while sophomore Tavien St. Clair brings the size and arm strength that can change a defenses outlook, even if his passing has not always been as precise.

The choice matters because it will shape how Ohio State tries to attack a USC defense on the road, and it also says plenty about where the offense is headed in the short term. Fahey gives the Buckeyes a more improvisational feel, while St. Clair offers a more classic downfield profile, leaving Day to weigh immediate stability against the kind of ceiling that can swing a big conference matchup. Ohio State Waiting On A Crucial John Mobley Jr. Return

Ohio State is still waiting to get a better read on John Mobley Jr., whose right ankle injury came in an exhibition game against Butler and has kept him out of practice since then. Coach Jake Diebler said the Buckeyes are cautiously optimistic about the guards recovery, but for now the situation remains fluid as they work through the final stretch before a matchup with BYU.

Mobley matters because he is more than just another rotation piece. The preseason All-Big Ten selection was one of Ohio States top scorers in the exhibitions, and his availability could shape how the Buckeyes handle an early-season test that already feels important for their backcourt depth. Diebler said the team expects more clarity on availability before the game, which is the kind of update Ohio State would much rather have sooner than later. [Read more 🡒]
