Ohio State's CFP Ranking Just Created A Brutal New Reality

CFP Chairman Hunter Yurachek's explanation for Ohio State's low ranking highlights the controversial criteria being used in determining team standings.

Ohio State’s place in the first College Football Playoff rankings came with a message that was hard to miss: the Buckeyes are going to have to earn everything from here on out.

The two-loss Buckeyes checked in at No. 12 on Tuesday after their lopsided loss to the USC Trojans on Saturday, a spot that wasn’t shocking on its face. What raised eyebrows was the explanation from College Football Playoff Committee Chairman Hunter Yurachek.

Asked why Ohio State was slotted where it was, especially with two other two-loss teams sitting ahead of it, Yurachek pointed away from the idea that the Buckeyes were being judged because of a young, first-time quarterback. He said Fahey played well and was not a main reason for the decision. Instead, he said the committee was concerned about the big, explosive plays Ohio State allowed.

Yurachek added that there was also concern in the room about the Buckeyes’ strength on both lines of scrimmage. Their offensive and defensive lines have shown weakness, and that part of the explanation makes sense.

Still, the reasoning left plenty to chew on. Ohio State played poorly against USC, but the idea that the ranking hinged on the anatomy of the loss - the types of plays surrendered, the specific issues up front - makes the whole process feel unusually granular. The Buckeyes were also a missed first-and-goal from inside the one-yard line away from having a real shot to win the game, and if that had gone differently, the conversation around them would look very different.

Instead, they took the loss and then got dinged for the big plays they gave up. From a rankings standpoint, that’s a strange way to frame it.

And that’s where the larger confusion starts. If the committee is parsing wins and losses this closely for Ohio State, it opens the door to even more questions about the rest of the rankings. There were plenty of questionable spots in this first release, but with so many teams bunched together, the board still has time to shake itself out.

For Ohio State, though, the takeaway was plain enough: win out, or don’t expect any help. The committee made that point clear with this first ranking.

Jeremiah Smith Just Got A Huge Heisman Opening For Ohio State

Jeremiah Smith has already put himself in the center of Ohio States offensive story this season, piling up 62 catches for 1,067 yards and 13 touchdowns while ranking among the national leaders in each category. For the Buckeyes, that production has made him more than just a featured receiver. He has become one of the defining reasons the offense has stayed on track as the team pushes to secure a spot in the College Football Playoff.

Now, with Miamis Malachi Toney sidelined for the rest of the regular season after suffering a high ankle sprain that required surgery, the Heisman conversation around the wide receiver position has shifted again. Smith still has to keep producing in the biggest moments, but the path in front of him looks a little clearer than it did before, and Ohio State will be counting on him to keep turning that opening into something even bigger. USC Defender Reveals What Fueled Ohio States Red Zone Frustration

USCs defense spent much of its Week 9 matchup with Ohio State setting a tone the Buckeyes never fully solved, especially when the field tightened near the goal line. The Trojans were disruptive from the start, finishing with two sacks, seven tackles for loss, a quarterback hit and a fumble recovery while holding Ohio State to nine points in the first half.

Freshman edge rusher Luke Wafle pointed to the groups trust and focus as the reason it held firm on the final drive, when Ohio State again pressed into red-zone territory and came away empty. With the bye week here, USC is using the break to keep that same edge in practice and keep its defensive standards from slipping. [Read more 🡒]

Ohio State Heads Into Oregon With Pressure Fans Can Feel

Urban Meyer is not exactly prone to understatement, and his reaction to Ohio States trip to Oregon reflected just how much is hanging over the Buckeyes right now. He pointed to Oregons recent strong play and framed this as the kind of game that can quickly define a season, especially for a team still trying to steady itself after a significant loss to USC.

For Ohio State, the pressure is about more than one Saturday in Eugene. The Buckeyes are in a precarious spot when it comes to College Football Playoff hopes, which makes the margin for error feel awfully thin. A response against Oregon would do more than quiet some of the anxiety around the program, but anything less would only sharpen the questions already building around this team. [Read more 🡒]
