Ohio State Reveals Key Insights on Defense After First Spring Practice

With Ohio State's spring practice underway, Coach Ryan Day evaluates promising developments and key battles across the Buckeyes' defensive lineup.

Ohio State’s spring practice is just getting underway, offering us an early peek into the Buckeyes' roster for the 2026 season. With the media granted access to the first hour of each of the initial two practices, and Ryan Day holding his first press conference of the year, we've gathered some intriguing insights. Key players Julian Sayin and Kenyatta Jackson Jr. also shared their thoughts, shedding light on both sides of the ball before the team takes a brief spring break.

Today, we’re diving into the defensive side of things, analyzing each position group as the Buckeyes gear up for their remaining spring practices.

Defensive End

Kenyatta Jackson Jr. stands out as the leader of the defensive end unit and potentially the entire defense. His prominence was underscored by being the first defender to address the media this spring.

The spot opposite Jackson is up for grabs, with a three-way battle brewing between sophomore Zion Grady, fifth-year senior Beau Atkinson, and Alabama transfer Qua Russaw. Grady is already turning heads with his potential, while Russaw brings a unique blend of explosiveness from his hybrid linebacker role at Alabama.

Jackson praised Russaw's strength and quickness, hinting at a promising addition to the rotation. True freshman Khary Wilder is also making waves early on, adding depth to a competitive group.

Defensive Tackle

The interior line is shaping up with Eddrick Houston and Will Smith Jr. returning, joined by transfers James Smith and John Walker. While it’s too soon to declare starters, all four are expected to see significant action. Jason Moore is another name to watch as he seeks to make an impact in his fourth year.

Smith, at 6-foot-2 and 314 pounds, has already caught attention with his physical presence. Both Smith and Walker impressed with their agility in early drills, showcasing the athleticism needed for a strong defensive front.

Day acknowledges the defensive line is still a work in progress, with many new faces vying for key roles. “There’s a lot to figure out,” he noted, highlighting the blend of returning and new talent.

Linebacker

Payton Pierce is emerging as the frontrunner for the Mike linebacker position, while Christian Alliegro leads the pack for the Will linebacker spot, especially with Riley Pettijohn sidelined by injury. Expect Pierce, Alliegro, and Pettijohn to form the core linebacker unit, but keep an eye on rising players like TJ Alford and Garrett Stover, who are pushing for more playing time.

The buzz around five-star freshman Cincere Johnson is palpable, as he looks ready to contribute right away. With depth and talent across the board, Ohio State could rotate more linebackers this season, a shift from recent years.

Cornerback

Sophomore Devin Sanchez is making strides toward securing a starting cornerback role alongside Jermaine Mathews Jr. Alabama transfer Cam Calhoun is the favorite for the third cornerback slot, but Dominick Kelly and freshmen Jordan Thomas and Jay Timmons are also in the mix, adding depth and competition.

Day is optimistic about the cornerback group, noting they’re “deeper than we’ve been,” which bodes well for the season ahead.

Safety

Transfers Earl Little Jr. and Terry Moore III are in line for starting roles with Jaylen McClain, but Leroy Roker III is making a strong case for himself, earning significant reps and leadership opportunities in practice.

While the top four safeties are promising, depth remains a concern as the Buckeyes develop their younger talent, including standout freshman Blaine Bradford. Day recognizes the loss of key players like Caleb Downs but is encouraged by the progress of the new additions and young prospects.

Ohio State’s defense is brimming with potential and depth, setting the stage for a competitive and exciting season. As spring practices continue, the Buckeyes are focused on solidifying their lineup and building a formidable defensive unit.
