Ohio State Lands Star Florida RB After Crucial Visit to Columbus

Ohio States backfield gets a key boost as veteran running back JaKobi Jackson brings experience, toughness, and depth to a unit looking to regain its edge.

Ohio State just landed another key piece through the transfer portal, and this one could have a big impact in the backfield. Former Florida running back Ja’Kobi Jackson is heading to Columbus, officially committing to the Buckeyes after an early visit during the transfer cycle.

This move checks a major box for Ohio State. Jackson brings SEC experience, a physical running style, and a track record of production - all qualities that should immediately bolster the Buckeyes' depth at running back.

At 5-foot-11 and 214 pounds, he’s built for Big Ten football. He runs with purpose, lowers his pads, and doesn’t shy away from contact.

He’s the kind of back who can wear down a defense over four quarters.

Jackson spent three seasons at Florida, carving out a role as a reliable rotational option and occasional starter. His breakout came in 2024, when he rushed for 509 yards and seven touchdowns, averaging over five yards per carry.

That kind of efficiency in the SEC speaks volumes. He was off to a promising start in 2025 before an injury sidelined him after just four games - a setback, yes, but one that preserved a year of eligibility and didn’t erase the flashes he showed early, including a career-best 39-yard performance against Miami.

In total, Jackson has logged 607 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns on 122 carries across his college career. He’s also added 11 receptions for 103 yards, showing he can contribute in the passing game when needed. He may not be a headline-grabber yet, but he’s productive, experienced, and tough - a perfect fit for what Ohio State wants in its backfield.

This addition is a big win for running backs coach Carlos Locklyn, who’s looking to recapture the form of his 2024 group - the one that helped power Ohio State to a national title behind Quinshon Judkins and TreVeyon Henderson. Adding Jackson to the mix gives Locklyn more flexibility and the ability to keep legs fresh over the course of a long season.

Bo Jackson, last year’s breakout freshman who topped the 1,000-yard mark, is returning for 2026, giving the Buckeyes a dynamic lead option. But Locklyn has always leaned toward a rotation - and Ja’Kobi Jackson gives him a powerful one-two punch.

Bo brings the home-run threat; Ja’Kobi brings the grind-it-out toughness. Together, they could form one of the more balanced backfields in the Big Ten.

Ja’Kobi’s path to Ohio State is one of grit and growth. He started at Coahoma Community College, where he earned a three-star rating from 247Sports, then worked his way into Florida’s rotation. Now, he steps into a program with championship aspirations and a clear opportunity to contribute.

After falling short in the College Football Playoff quarterfinals to Miami, the Buckeyes are reloading - and Jackson’s arrival is another sign they’re serious about making another run.
