Ohio State has another elite quarterback on the way, and Christopher Vargas is already making one thing clear: he has no interest in living in CJ Stroud’s shadow.
The 5-star 2028 commit has drawn the obvious comparison to one of the Buckeyes’ recent stars, but Vargas is steering that conversation right back to himself. He acknowledged the similarities in style, yet made it plain that he plans to build his own identity in Columbus.
“I mean, I have a similar playing style, but I'm Chris Vargas, I'm not CJ Stroud,” a humble Vargas said with a smile on his face in the clip below.
“I’m going to bring everything to that program I can.”

That mindset is a big reason why the Buckeyes are so excited about what’s coming next. In an interview with reporter Alex Agrella, Vargas said he has a strong relationship with Ryan Day, and that connection helped push him toward Ohio State when he made his choice.
The recruitment itself was loaded. Vargas, ranked as the No.
1 QB in the country and a five-star prospect in the 247Sports Composite, had 20 offers before choosing the Buckeyes over Alabama, Oregon and others. At 6-foot-4 and 195 pounds, he already brings the kind of frame college coaches love, and there’s still room for him to grow before he ever takes a snap in the Big Ten.
Of course, recruiting never truly ends until a prospect signs. But Vargas sure sounds locked in on Ohio State, and he made that point directly to the fanbase.
"I mean, I'm a hard worker and I'm going to bring everything to that program that I can," Vargas said. "Work as hard as I can to be the best player I can be, but also the best person. That's what they're (fans) getting."
Vargas has built his reputation on what he does between the lines, and these comments only add to the buzz around his future in Columbus. Fans will have to wait another two years before seeing him in action with the Buckeyes, but with the top quarterback in the class already sounding this grounded, Ohio State may have landed exactly the kind of player it was hoping for.
