Ohio State has another elite quarterback on the way, and Christopher Vargas is already making one thing clear: he has no interest in living in CJ Stroud’s shadow.
The 5-star 2028 commit has drawn the obvious comparison to one of the Buckeyes’ recent stars, but Vargas is steering that conversation right back to himself. He acknowledged the similarities in style, yet made it plain that he plans to build his own identity in Columbus.
“I mean, I have a similar playing style, but I'm Chris Vargas, I'm not CJ Stroud,” a humble Vargas said with a smile on his face in the clip below.
“I’m going to bring everything to that program I can.”
Buckeye fans, you’re not just getting a 5⭐️ QB in Chris Vargas you’re getting a 5⭐️ person, too.
Ohio State got a special one.

That mindset is a big reason why the Buckeyes are so excited about what’s coming next. In an interview with reporter Alex Agrella, Vargas said he has a strong relationship with Ryan Day, and that connection helped push him toward Ohio State when he made his choice.
The recruitment itself was loaded. Vargas, ranked as the No.
1 QB in the country and a five-star prospect in the 247Sports Composite, had 20 offers before choosing the Buckeyes over Alabama, Oregon and others. At 6-foot-4 and 195 pounds, he already brings the kind of frame college coaches love, and there’s still room for him to grow before he ever takes a snap in the Big Ten.
Of course, recruiting never truly ends until a prospect signs. But Vargas sure sounds locked in on Ohio State, and he made that point directly to the fanbase.
"I mean, I'm a hard worker and I'm going to bring everything to that program that I can," Vargas said. "Work as hard as I can to be the best player I can be, but also the best person. That's what they're (fans) getting."
Vargas has built his reputation on what he does between the lines, and these comments only add to the buzz around his future in Columbus. Fans will have to wait another two years before seeing him in action with the Buckeyes, but with the top quarterback in the class already sounding this grounded, Ohio State may have landed exactly the kind of player it was hoping for.

James Laurinaitis Is Driving Ohio State's Next Big Recruiting Push
With Ohio State moving toward its season opener and a run of scrimmages and announcements on the calendar, the focus inside the program is still on the next wave of talent just as much as the next game. James Laurinaitis has become a familiar name in that effort, with the former Buckeyes linebacker helping keep recruiting relationships warm while the staff balances camp work and the start of the season.
One of the clearest signs of that push is the attention being paid to New Jersey linebacker Tahj Gray, a rising prospect the staff wants on campus this fall. Ohio State has an important window to make an impression on the 2028 class, and Grays upcoming trip gives Laurinaitis and the Buckeyes another chance to show why the program keeps landing in the middle of these early national battles. Will Howard Faces A Big Steelers Test Ohio State Fans Will Watch
Will Howards first real chance to make a preseason impression for the Steelers is approaching, and it comes with a little extra intrigue for Ohio State fans keeping tabs on the former Buckeyes quarterback. Pittsburghs second preseason game is being treated as an important checkpoint in the teams quarterback competition, giving Howard a meaningful stage as he continues working to carve out his place on the roster.
Howard is part of a battle that goes beyond simply earning reps, with the Steelers sorting out who fits best behind Aaron Rodgers in what is expected to be Rodgers final season. Drew Allar is also in that mix, which only raises the stakes for the game and gives Howard a chance to show whether he can separate himself in a job race that could shape the rest of the summer. Ohio States New Offense Is Already Sending A Clear Message
Arthur Smith is only in the building as Ohio States new offensive coordinator, but his early imprint is already being noticed by the players. Isaiah West said the offense feels more streamlined under Smith, with a smaller, more focused playbook that seems designed to make the Buckeyes easier to organize and faster to play with. After Brian Hartline left to become the head coach at USF, the change at coordinator was always going to be one of the biggest storylines of the offseason, and the way Smith is shaping the unit has given it an immediate point of interest.
For Ohio State, the timing matters because the offense is coming off a year in which it finished 26th nationally in yards per game, a number that put a little more pressure on every adjustment the staff makes. A cleaner structure can mean clearer roles for the players, and it can also signal a philosophical reset as the Buckeyes try to get back to the level expected in Columbus. Wests comments suggest the early tone around the room is positive, even if the full meaning of the new approach will only become clear once the season starts. [Read more 🡒]
