Ohio State’s work at running back in the 2027 class has taken a few hits, but the Buckeyes just landed a chance to get back in the race.
According to Rivals, Gainesville, Georgia back Nigel Newkirk has set a visit to Columbus for Nov. 7, when Ohio State hosts Oregon. Newkirk is committed to Alabama, a pledge he made back in May, but the Buckeyes have kept in touch and now have a real opening to keep pushing.
That matters for Ohio State because the position has been slow to come together. The Buckeyes already watched top target David Gabriel-Georges go to Tennessee, and last week they took another loss when in-state back Jordan Hall committed to Penn State. With two of their biggest targets off the board, the staff has had to keep working the high school trail while many around the program have looked at the transfer portal as the likeliest answer.
Newkirk would be a meaningful get if Ohio State can make real progress. The 5-foot-11, 200-pound back is ranked No. 226 nationally and No. 16 among running backs in the 2027 class by the 247Sports Composite. He’s exactly the kind of talent the Buckeyes need in a class that could use a lift at running back.
That said, a visit is only the first step. Alabama is not going to hand over one of its commits without a fight, and Ohio State still has plenty to do if it wants to flip him. But getting him in Columbus for a marquee Big Ten showdown is a strong place to start.
The Buckeyes aren’t done chasing help at the position, and Newkirk’s trip gives them a fresh shot to make an impression.
Ohio State will also host another in-state prospect next month, this time on the offensive line. Nehemiah Ramsey, a 2029 lineman from Lima, Ohio, said he’ll be in Columbus for the Nov. 14 game against Northwestern.
Ramsey is listed at 6-foot-2 and 280 pounds, already a solid build for a player this early in his high school career. His film has shown promise, too, though he still doesn’t have his first scholarship offer. Even so, early visits like this can matter, and Ohio State will get another look at a young Ohio prospect as his recruitment starts to take shape.

Ohio State Just Got Troubling News Before USC's Passing Test
Ohio States defensive backfield took a hit this week as Jay Timmons was downgraded from questionable to doubtful for the matchup with USC. Timmons has been one of the Buckeyes more important playmakers on that side of the ball this season, and his availability matters even more with the Trojans bringing a passing game that will force Ohio State to be sharp on the back end.
If Timmons cannot go, the Buckeyes will have to lean on Jermaine Matthews Jr. and Cam Calhoun to help fill the gap. It is the kind of late-week development that can change how a defense approaches a game plan, especially against an opponent that can stress coverage in a hurry. [Read more 🡒]
Ohio State Suddenly Has A Tavien St. Clair Question Fans Feared
Tavien St. Clair was supposed to be part of Ohio States future at quarterback, but the picture has changed quickly. With true freshman Luke Fahey stepping in for the injured Julian Sayin, St. Clair is now the backup, a surprising turn for a player who had once been viewed as the next man up in the room.
For the Buckeyes, the immediate concern is obvious: the depth chart has shifted, and the quarterback conversation has gotten a lot more complicated. Beyond the short term, St. Clairs place in the program is suddenly a storyline worth watching, with his next move and Ohio States long-term plans still unresolved. [Read more 🡒]
Ohio State Freshman Faces A Familiar Path Fans Have Seen Before
Anthony Thompsons first taste of college basketball has looked a lot like the learning curve Ohio State has seen before from talented freshmen. The highly rated newcomer has flashed the kind of potential that made him such a coveted addition, but through preseason action his statistical impact has been limited, and the early returns suggest he will need time to settle in against the speed and physicality of the next level.
Coaches and analysts around the program are drawing a familiar comparison to Malaki Branham, who also started slowly before growing into a key contributor later in the season. Thompsons ceiling is clear, but his aggressiveness and production have not fully shown up yet, leaving Ohio State in a patient waiting game as it looks for the freshman to follow a similar path.
