Ohio State Is Being Overlooked Again Despite John Mobley Jr. Buzz

John Mobley Jr.'s standout preseason honor raises hopes for an Ohio State team facing middle-pack predictions in the Big Ten.

John Mobley Jr. got his preseason nod on Monday, and Ohio State’s place in the Big Ten picture came into focus right alongside it.

The junior guard was one of 11 players selected to the conference’s preseason All-Big Ten team, a recognition that follows a 2025-26 season in which he averaged 15.7 points and 2.8 assists per game. That production earned Mobley All-Big Ten Honorable Mention honors last season, and now he enters this year with his name among the league’s projected standouts.

At Ohio State’s media day last week, Mobley laid out the areas he wants to sharpen after going through the NBA draft process.

"Just trying to translate the feedback I got from the (NBA draft process)," Mobley said at Ohio State’s media day last week on what he wants to improve this season. "Trying to change my body, become more of a leader, and also just become more of a playmaker on the offensive end, getting guys more involved. Just trying to be more of a three-level scorer."

Mobley’s preseason All-Big Ten group includes Illinois’ Andrej Stojakovic and David Mirkovic, Michigan’s Elliot Cadeau and Trey McKenney, Wisconsin’s Nolan Winter, USC’s Rodney Rice, Michigan State’s Jeremy Fears Jr., Nebraska’s Pryce Sandfort, UCLA’s Trent Perry and Maryland’s Pharrell Payne. Fears was named Big Ten Preseason Player of the Year.

The Columbus Dispatch’s preseason media poll put Mobley on the second team, joining Winter, Rice, Stojakovic and Indiana’s Aiden Sherrell. The first team in that poll featured Fears, Sandfort, Mirkovic, Cadeau and McKenney.

Ohio State freshman Anthony Thompson also drew major attention in the poll. The five-star recruit, the highest-rated player to sign with the Buckeyes since Jared Sullinger in 2010, was picked as Big Ten Freshman of the Year.

Thompson received 15 first-place votes, ahead of UCLA’s Nikola Kusturica, who got nine. Quentin Coleman and Christian Collins from Illinois, Luke Ertel from Purdue and Maryland’s Baba Oladotun each received one vote.

"I don't really think a whole lot about it," Thompson said last week of his five-star expectations. "I just focus on playing hard and staying focused, and try to get better every single day."

As a team, Ohio State was picked to finish eighth in the conference in the Dispatch poll, slotting behind Illinois, Michigan State, Michigan, UCLA, Nebraska, Purdue and USC.

The Buckeyes open their season Wednesday with a preseason tune-up against Cincinnati in Mason, Ohio, in an outdoor game as part of the .
