Michael Redd Stuns As Ohio State Rises From Ashes To Final Four

Michael Redd and Scoonie Penn's unforgettable performances propelled Ohio State to the 1999 Final Four, marking a remarkable turnaround season.

In the mid-1990s, Ohio State men’s basketball hit some rough patches, enduring five straight losing seasons. The 1998 campaign was particularly tough, with the Buckeyes managing just one win in Big Ten play. Yet, amidst the struggle, freshman guard Michael Redd emerged as a beacon of hope, leading the team with impressive stats: 21.9 points, 6.5 rebounds, and 3.0 assists per game.

Redd, a local talent from Columbus, quickly became the star player for Ohio State. His impact was profound, especially with the arrival of Scoonie Penn, a transfer from Boston College.

Penn brought a new dynamic to the team, and together, they revitalized the Buckeyes. The duo led Ohio State to a 22-7 regular-season record, including a strong 12-4 in Big Ten play.

Redd was again the top scorer, while Penn added crucial points and assists.

Their synergy was on full display during the 1999 Big Ten Tournament, where Ohio State defeated Michigan decisively before falling to Illinois in the semifinals. Despite the loss, Redd's 32-point performance was a highlight.

Entering the NCAA Tournament as a No. 4 seed, Ohio State faced Murray State in the first round. While Penn struggled, Redd stepped up, scoring 27 points to secure a 72-58 victory. The Buckeyes then capitalized on an upset by Detroit Mercy over UCLA, defeating the Titans 75-44 with both Redd and Penn contributing significantly.

Redd's standout performances continued as Ohio State advanced to the Sweet Sixteen, where they faced the No. 1 seed Auburn Tigers. In a thrilling contest, the Buckeyes pulled away late, thanks to a 9-0 run, sealing a 72-64 win. Redd and Penn were instrumental, combining for 48 points.

The Elite Eight matchup against St. John’s featured future NBA star Ron Artest, but Ohio State held firm. Redd and Penn combined for 42 points, leading the Buckeyes to a 77-74 victory and a spot in the Final Four.

In St. Petersburg, Ohio State faced a formidable Connecticut team led by All-American Richard Hamilton. Despite Redd and Penn’s efforts, Hamilton’s 24 points propelled UConn to a 64-58 win, ending Ohio State’s remarkable run.

Though the Buckeyes’ achievements were later vacated due to recruiting violations, the 1998-99 team remains a cherished memory for fans, showcasing the incredible talents of Redd and Penn during their unforgettable journey to the Final Four.
